Retired means that it does not drop anymore. It has been replaced (to an extent) with Plate with the Shielding prefix.

I think it is newbie unfriendly. There should be some automated walkthrough helper when someone first starts playing. A little helper, kinda like that stupid little paper clip in Microsoft Office.
