The more convoluted game mechanics I hear being discussed, the less I care to try this game.

What the fuck have I done ._.
What indeed. To answer your question, though, the original Red Steel was a crappy Wii launch title about gunfights with yakuza and it had terrible motion controls. The sequel is a slightly campy samurai/Western thing with a stronger swordplay focus and less terrible motion controls.
My favorite conversation in the whole thing (while you're encountering new enemies, the Katakara):
Old swordsmith: "So, this is the work of the Katakara clan!"
Token female: "The Katakara clan? That's just a myth. There is no Katakara clan anymore."
Old swordsmith: "No? Good. Then we are all safe. I will become a gardener."
