Also, I never read DRRRRRRRRR!! so I dunno if it suffered or died painlessly. I personally loved the voice acting and the action. It was a personal recommendation from Hayder so I take it to heart. But I can definitely understand your point: often it is hard to even equate a visual re-imagining with the original. Though I'll always think Yu Yu Hakusho was much better visual. Following are a list of works that were better on an animated medium:
Wagnaria, Lucky Star, Pani Poni Dash (from back when Shaft did amazing anime), Aria (dat soundtrack), Katanagatari, Sketchbook Full Color's (Dat soundtrack and voice acting), Penis McGee's Lovely Johnsons.
* One thing I learned from working in one of the top Software companies in the world is that good coders don't comment, they document and use good variable names. Shitty coders write 10 lines of comments for each line of code and waste my damn time. The more you know.
Basically, the second half covering the Slasher and Yellow Scarf arcs (well, mostly the Yellow Scarf arc) felt like they added WAAAAAAY more angst than needed. I mean, I don't recall feeling this annoyed with Mikado & Kida in the novels, but here, it kinda rubbed me the wrong way with filler scenes for even more filler angst, as well as that speech Kida about getting over the past and whatnot, which felt overly cheesy.
I also think Hunter x Hunter 2011 suffers from the animation's unwillingness to add the blood and replace it with sparkles most of the time. I mean, I can understand the unwillingness to show a dude's face after a dude used his ~explosion hand~ powers to pretty much blow up his face, and they got around it wonderfully by having the guy writhing on the floor with his hands on his face, but other scenes, such as a dude having his hands cut off with ~sparkles~, just felt weird.
Plus, the whole subplot in the Yellow Scarf arc with the "Find the girl in the Raira uniform with glasses and large breasts" was like... ugh for me. Felt so over-the-top, especially when Mikao reads about it and the fraggin' episode ends on the cliffhanger with him repeating the same words we'd heard fucking over and over. YES WE GET IT ANRI HAS A UNIFORM AND GLASSES AND LARGE BREASTS DO WE SERIOUSLY HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS SHIT.
Also a minor nitpick but I hate how they changed Simon's lines to Izaya by taking out the very first thing he says.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the first half, and I didn't hate the second half. Erika and Walker are a fucking delight whenever they appear, and I regret that I'm not in Korea to buy Volume 11, considering what happens in Volume 10. I also fucking loved how they handled the OP - I love the music (took me a while to get into the second OP, and I don't think I'll ever love the second ED), and I love the integration of the previous episode previews into the OP. I liked the initial episodes choosing to focus on a separate character each time, instead of going for the strict chronological view.
Ya, I wasn't too big on the second OP, until I was. Took a few weeks and then I loved it too. And yes, I understand your point: I too disliked the angst; I didn't know the mango[sic] didn't have that. I just assume all Japanese are angsty, emo, schoolgirls.
Also, I refuse to watch HunterxHunter 2011, as I loved the 1999 version way too much. The voice actors were spectacular and the OPs by Wino were too good. Too bad the DVDs were too overpriced and don't exist anymore - I really wanted to add those to my collection.
The second OP just feels overly angsty, what with starting with the pictures of the trio just looking all downbeat (though once again Erika and Walker stand out as hilarious).
Also the thing with Masaomi and Saki - in the novels, Mikado and Anri NEVER knew about her. Which is why they feel so hurt and confused when Masaomi suddenly disappears - because in the light novels, Masaomi never told them that he was going to vanish. I'm also given to understand that a lot of fans who've watched only the anime dislike Saki as a result of this, blaming her for breaking up the group, when in the original novels Masaomi vanishing is due to his inability to get past his fuckups as well as dealing with guilt - which is why he wasn't able to face Saki for such a long time.
I never saw the first rendition; by the time I got into Hunter x Hunter, I believe it had already ended? Or maybe the Green Island OVA was airing?
Also I hate Anri. Love breasts. This is one of very few cases where I have been this conflicted. And I don't actually like the OP video, but I like the song.
I left China and got a better paying job with better benefits back in 'Murika, where people actually speak English (most of the time). I will miss the Yoshinoya and tea, though.
I didn't tell her I was coming back. So I hid in her closet, jumped out when she came in, and threw that onahole at her. Yes, I actually took that thing through Customs. And yes, she actually threw me across the room again. But it was hilarious, totally worth it.
I never really did software, just whatever firmware the controller needed. And the company is decent. Its not a national company or even high-tech, but the benefits and job security are good enough that I can either stay for the rest of my career or use it as a stepping stone.
