This is not a question about a direct manga passage but more of a Japanese language or cultural question.

The word "すき" Suki.
Is there a particular implication with it. I know it means love and like, but which one is more appropriate? Thank you in advance!

It depends on the context. Some words in Japanese have degrees of emotion. In English, it actually is similar.


I would argue that in English how we say "I like X" is virtually the same thing in Japanese when they say xが好き

Tone and context will determine to which degree in both English and Japanese. It will seem unnecessarily confusing without context though.

It's not about which one is more appropriate because it can mean both things. I guess it will more often than not mean 'like', but it sometimes can mean 'love'. However, this determination is extremely context-dependent. You can put percentages up all day but it won't really help because your situation may be different.


Similarly, しらない(知らない）is the same thing, where it can mean "X doesn't know Y", or it could mean, "X does not care about Y", and that's all up to the context, regardless of the 'percentages' of what someone encounters more.

Another alternative for 何かいいかも in this case is, "I think I [ might / might actually ] like this", which native people actually say from time to time.

The 何 character is not the same nuance-feeling as これは何？ It's more of a filler word/feeling before saying something.

Ex:

"I think he's...kind of annoying..."


That pause is pretty common and is just sort of like you trying to pinpoint a certain feeling to what your saying, so it's acting like a filler. Ex: "Don't you like Bob"? "Who, Bob? Hmmm, he's kind of...annoying, ya know"

Again, I'm not good at explaining stuff, but the telltale sign that the kamo here isn't about any duck is if it's directly preceded by any of 何か (and its variations such as なんだか) / ちょっと / なかなか / かなり.

Since Japanese is such a punny language, watching a subtitled anime/drama is probably the best way to get used to it.

It's because かも　is short for かもしれません which is like "いいかもしれません” （you're not saying it's 100% good, you're saying it might be good)

The way to get used to that is by watching anime or Japanese shows and paying attention to what they're saying. You can argue the なかなか makes the 'good degree' higher, so instead of "This might be good", it'd be, "This might (actually) be pretty good". Duck is ruled about because of the context.

These dots are the Japanese /. If you are using the Japanese input method of Google Translate it will input / as ・ automatically. If you are using a phone it's part of the special characters list. Outside of Google Translate you will most likely have to use the Microsoft IME. Personally I have configured a custom keyboard mapping for said IME in which I replaced all the special characters on a western keyboard with their Japanese equivalents.

The dots just represent emphasis on the words in question. Japanese is pretty monotone unlike English, so you rarely see emphasis on words. Having said that, it's not necessarily the case that emphasis means you get louder. So, it's something like, "Youand Mommywill become one".
