Then, FIL says that the son owes him money. Which makes no sense to me.

Here's what I got, I'll put the sentence I'm particulary struggling with in green :

for paying his debts ?
FIL - As I thought, he didn't tell you...
Father-and-son's relationship doesn't matter, debts are debts. (Looks weird to me, as he's saying the contrary right after)

First of all it's confusing because he owes two parties money technically. But in any case, things might make more sense if you think of the FIL's goal. His goal is not to pay back the money. His goal is to fuck his wife, which is why he's telling the wife all of this before the payments are made.

So yes if the son already paid everything like he said he was going to do it wouldn't make sense if the son had to owe the dad. The reason why the son owes the FIL money is because the FIL is paying the company instead of the son, so the son would eventually have to give the dad at least half because at this point in the story, the FIL offered to pay that much.


If the son said, "I'll pay full", and then the FIL said, "No, I'll pay half" in response, then this page would make sense. If the son said, "I'll pay in full" in response to the FIL saying, "I'll pay half", then yes this panel wouldn't make much sense, but I think it's the former.


In regards to 無駄, instead of 'serious' in this case, I would say 'earnest' because the context is talking about his 'good nature' personality and his care for the others around him, which is why he offered to pay for full, just as the FIL and you pointed out. But, the father is saying that he is TOO earnest. So I would say he's overly earnest for this translation. He's saying 全額(total money) is しんどい, and しんどい is like　大変 or rough. So he's saying, "Yeah, the total loan is a hell of a lot isn't it?" in response to her question, "So how much does he owe you"?(because she only asked basically how much he owes the FIL, which was only half).
