Thanks, VVayfarer! They make a lot more sense to me now.

I decided to go with these:

1. We may be a secular country, but events like this are still really fun.

2. She's modest and considerate, unlike those other man-hungry girls.

3. At my age, I should be enjoying the prime of my life, so...

I really appreciate your help. Thanks again!

If the context works with that, the original probably meant "We may be one of the most secular countries, but it's amazing we have so many events, right" or ...'amazing we have such great events' or something. But it probably works without that change, too.

The context is like this: the speaker was asked something like, "If you don't believe in gods, why are you doing a New Year shrine visit?" The text you helped translate was her reply; I just tweaked it a bit to make it fit.

Why not provide the context in the first place instead of making people guess? It's very odd to me that people seem to be reluctant to provide the source when they ask for help.

I get your point and understand that in some cases context is critical in providing an accurate translation. Most of the time, though, I'm simply stumped by a single line (as opposed to a whole panel or page), and would rather provide a copy of the line than saying, "I need help in translating bubble 2 of panel 5 on this particular page," -- which would require someone to view the page and read through everything.

Having said that, I'd be happy to provide images or links the next time, if others agree that it would be more helpful.

If the line got you stumped, chances are it isn't that straightforward in the first place. :P

Obviously you should use common sense when deciding where to include context, but it's better to do it than not, since like freudia said, it saves the others from having to try deducing the context themselves. I think including a picture is usually (not always) unnecessary --- a short description (or the previous line in this case) will do.

First line provided for context, it's the second line giving me trouble. Help?

@Coconut:

"Hey, calling it fake information makes me sound like a bad person, Hatate-chan" /// or 'disinformation', 'false information'

more lit: " Calling it 'fake information', you're making it sound like I'm a bad guy, Hatate-chan."

Something like that.

I didn't! DX I would've noticed it by the time I read が悪い.

I just think 'make sb sound like a bad guy / like they're in the wrong' gets the point across for 「人聞きが悪い」.

If we were to go even more literal it would be something like:
"Calling it 'fake information' makes it (/me) sound pretty bad (if others were to hear it), Hatate-chan"

Or without parens:
"'Fake information', that would sound pretty bad if others were to hear it, Hatate-chan" /// or smt

Can anyone read the first kanji on the upper right corner of this text?

(IMG:[i264.photobucket.com] http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii161/VVayfarer/7126667e-a69c-4ab1-a684-20e3ecc8c146.png?t=1424607256)

I've tried searching kanji/hanzi by radicals, but it's as if nothing like that even exists... I've also tried taking into account possible variations in style, but it's just no good. I'd really appreciate any ideas on this one.

In the previous box the narrator talks about how it's only a matter of time before she gets killed or has her son taken from her.

Thanks! Now it makes sense.

I guess you're right. Seems like there's not even a Unicode symbol for that variant... no wonder I couldn't find it in the databases I used. D:
