No, if your party members die, but you can revive them in battle or go to a church and pay to revive them. Your main character can't die, though or the battle ends and you you go back to your last save. You wanna make sure everyone and your party at least stays leveled up, as all the battles are scripted events and not random. There's a bit of strategy in it, but I think given a chance you'd really like it.

I'd say go for it. It's probably the second best RPG series on the Genesis/Megadrive after Phantasy Star.
