speaking of realtek, anyone else noticed on newer computers some realtek software that seems to need to be running in addition to the driver to get sound, which uses a crapton of CPU time whenever it's running?
A recent issue? A decade ago I had that problem but was able to find the direct drivers just for the chipset that realtek had licensed in that case. I think it was a c-media chip after the realtek acquisition agreement.

On the GPU front, someone i know seems to have a faulty dedicated GPU in their gaming laptop. Random BSOD's with status messages about IRQ problems. Anything they should try that doesn't involve baking the motherboard, apart from switching to integrated graphics? We ruled out driver downgrades and ran memtest for about half a day (four passes) which turned up nothing. It happens most often when gaming, too.
I told them to switch to integrated graphics and forget about using the AMD GPU. But they are reluctant to swallow that pill. Despite their integrated GPU being probably more powerful than my most performant dedicated one (which is 10+ years old).
Which graphics chip is it? if its in the 2006-2015 era they had lead free solder issues.
If the laptop has a discrete MXM graphics module its much more repairable. Baking laptop chips is far less successful than with larger graphics chips, and reballing is also less successful.
IRQ errors are usually weird ass driver / chipset conflicts or hybrid graphics setting issue. Did hardware panel show any malfunctioning devices or a chipset conflicts or error icons.
Usually i'd go through the trouble shooting steps
1. Update windows, update chipset drivers, update graphics drivers. (you may need to do a full uninstall of the drivers to clean reinstall using uninstall tool)
2. Check hybrid or graphics switching settings (if it can be disabled)
3. Boot in safe mode
4. Remove all USB devices
If the laptop has a manufacturer 3rd party control panel, sometimes those cause grief and cause IRQ errors. Most recent case I dealt with was Asus's pile of shit armory crate that used to be decent but now causes IRQ errors and is constantly vulnerable to zero day exploits.
Most recent IRQ errors I resolved
1. ASUS Armoury crate
2. Weird conflict with a fancy USB hub
3. Update / uninstalling manufacturer control panel
4. Disabling the RGB...
5. Changing the Wifi card... the hunter killer mega wifi chip was causing a weird conflict
Usually resolved by updating everything, windows, chipset, graphics. Once required a fresh install.
