How about creating a template of frequently asked questions and responses to them?

People tend to be very non-receptive to explanations about why they can't have what they want. They just want what they want, and anything that runs counter to getting what they want is invalid by definition. There even is a "but why" post linked at the very start of the first post, and people are still making "bring back page numbers!" posts.

I'm sure there is a bit of a language barrier issue, and I get that some people are using some app that either isn't getting updated or where they have an older device that can't run the updated version, but while I try not to break compatibility unnecessarily, it really isn't feasible to maintain backwards compatibility with outdated apps indefinitely.

I too have trouble reading through 700 pages, but have you heard any response on the suggestion to allow selective use of page numbers for searches not exceeding 1000 pages?
I don't think everyone who is inconvenienced is jumping through 1000+ pages of huge search results every day

I think it's natural for people to be frustrated and not keep track of all the sporadic replies scattered throughout the thread.

It's not worth implementing an entire paging system just to do this though. Also people who get 1001 results will be upset. People won't know why they sometimes get pages and othertimes don't because as this thread has shown people don't read.
Also currently the system doesn't support knowing how many results there are for a search. So it doesn't even know if there will be under 1000 results (in most circumstances). Tenb says he's working on improving the estimate in the future though.

It doesn't really "add pages" as such. As far as I can tell it just adds some jump points (I assume the bar is clickable), and a "skip prev/next page" button. I don't really see the point of the latter, but it's not banned or anything.

In general we don't try to police what scripts people use on EH, nor would it really be feasible to do so. The only caveat is that if it hits the servers too hard, it might cause the auto-ban mechanism to trigger.

This was a thing early in the redesign, but there is a lot of non-resolvable wonkiness to it, so not in that shape. I am looking into adding some form of "progress indicator", but it's kinda tricky to make it without the wonk.

As someone who does not visit the forums, or even log in, on anything resembling a regular basis, and tends to only see the front page, if it is possible and practical, posting a note there to check the forums for news on UI changes might help with the displeasure from future updates. Also, again if possible and practical, something like what aklfhl suggested would fix my issue with the change, simply not knowing where in the search/category results I am is confusing.

I know there is a lot of work going on in the back end that we users don't see, thank you for doing all that for us Tenboro; and I hope this change will reduce the amount of work you have to do.

"Feature Request" time:

I thought of something that could improve my use of my favorites, though I think of it as an alternative of the current system, rather than a replacement that overwrite it, since it may not be an improvement for other use cases:
Instead of a "prev" and a "next" button, there would be a "see more" button, and when clicked, it would load the next results in the current page.

Thinking more and more it could be a good idea.

Other feature proposal:
A "download search results" feature.

Just like the "download gallery" feature, it would produce content put in an archive.

Said content would be a search result page with more results than normal (all of them if it's reasonable, I leave the meaning of "reasonable" up to you), and the thumbnails, and the page would have the code needed to not require any access to the server while loaded, except if loading a gallery by clicking it of course.

Like for gallery download, it would display a "please wait while the archive is created" message, but it could take as much time as needed to do the work with as little impact on the server as possible.

There could be other regulations of the features: GP cost, cooldown before reuse, limited amount of use per week/month, others... if needed.

Thanks for the technical explanation, I don't like the change but hardware limitations along with lack of capital can only be answered with compromise, this has been the case for any systems at scale.

I'm not going to pretend to understand all the technical stuff behind the scenes and why this change was necessary for the servers. All I can say is that as a user the lack of a page counter is incredibly disorienting and makes the site feel borderline unusable.

You're probably tired of hearing this complaint so often, but if people are complaining so much then consider that they might have a point. If this is a hill you're willing to die on then mark my words, you'll die here.

You could play hv and save credits for a star. There are a lot of players who pay for stars.
It boggles my mind the number of people here who never played hv. Such a unique game and only one of its kind. You could have gotten perks for the site, credits for bounties, etc. It has crossed my mind that some people in this thread might have very valuable items and they might not even know it.

Tenboro could just unplug everything and start enjoy his life a bit more, instead of staying here to provide you (and more importantly, us) such an extraordinary free service. For more time then most sites survive. Did you even stopped to consider that for a moment ?

It's working for me.

Click jump/seek, select the date you want to go and then click seek.

EDIT: Ah, I see what you mean, you mean you can't click in the [< Seek] box when you're in the first page. Yes, I can't either, it's probably an oversight.

EDIT2: Not only that, but we also can't seek forward [Seek >] when we are in the last page.

Fixed some instances where it would produce invalid queries and error out if intermediary results were empty. (There would be no results in this case anyway.)
Concisely, instead of navigating to "results on <pagenumber>" you navigate to "results immediately following <galleryid>" or "results immediately preceding <galleryid>" depending on whether you are going forwards (from newer to older) or backwards (from older to newer). So you can navigate all of the galleries from start to end, you just can't go to "pagenumber=364" because the system doesn't know what that is.
If you look at the URL, you'll see "next=number" or "prev=number" at the end of it. This number is the gallery id, and you can change it to whatever to go to the results immediately following (next) or preceding (prev) that gallery.
It's gone as the index has grown to a size where it's not computationally feasible to have it anymore.
If you explain why you need to go to page 50, I'll tell you how it's intended to work with the new search engine.
