Upon getting a cold strike Rapier dropped, I was really curious how much of a difference a different strike does. I always felt the significance can't be big. So I did IW 10 with it, and tested it in 4 different arenas (all @pfudor) compared to my Rapier with holy strike, 1h style. Just one run of each of them, on days with no influence in the respective element. (for reference, holy one tested thursday, cold one saturday)

First of all some equip stats. To be future proof I type the stats.
Current Rapier: Magnificent Hallowed Rapier of the Nimble with a few upgrades and soulbound. Butcher 5 Fatality 4
Tested Rapier: Level 355 Legendary Arctic Rapier of Slaughter. Butcher Fatality and Overpower 3 (Nice, I can also see what Overpower does. Something people started to appreciate more) No upgrades.

Changes upon equip (current level 359):

Base damage: 6769->6891
Hit chance: 182.5%->176.6%
Crit chance: 39.2% +64% damage ->38.6% +62% damage
Parry: 59.1%->49.6%

As far as math goes, this should be pretty even. Slightly more base damage, but less damage from crits and less counters. In total this should actually mean slightly less damage per turn, though really just very slightly so, and in theory.

Also perhaps important: Penetrate armor: 20.2% -> 24.3% 7 turns both
No infusions, no scrolls, no regular imperil. Tried to keep the orbital cannons the same amount, just like the general strategy. The rows with the higher hit numbers are offensive, the other is defensive.

My conclusion: The only arena taking more turns was dwd, but it also had about the same amount of damage dealt increase as the increase to the turns. (less Konatas + the small level difference?)
Looking only at the elemental damage dealt, it's clear cold loses out in school girl arenas. However it doesn't look like it really does a whole lot, as if the damage is made up by other stuff anyway. The difference outside of school girl arenas is also not really bigger, even though cold performs better.
The less parry is easily visible, just like the resulting less counters. Counters do not however deal that much damage anyway.? Also the parry ignore (overpower) is visible in 3 out of 4 cases. The 225 arena shows, overpower can sometimes do nothing. The holy run had more attack commands (the only thing that can be parried), but less parries than the cold run. (actually a very nice result showing that overpower is not the reason why cold performs well) Accuracy is not really having much of an impact. Not too surprising with 1h. I'd assume the minor decrease in turns is the 20% more likely penetrate armor. (20.2% -> 24.3%) A minor effect at most.


tl;dr: This is all within a range where it can just be fluctuation, though a trend is showing that cold performs not really much worse than holy. But this also tells me at least, that wanting dark/holy strike over another one is a luxury thing. If the effect doesn't show much in a test like this, it can't really be significant enough to really care about. I always had this feeling, as I felt like using an infusion would barely change anything. At least right now.
As for overpower... it really feels all the same. I'd assume Fatality might be the most useful to have on 5, but there's really no huge difference. I don't complain though.

wednesday, lvl 376, no perks besides innate arcana, only 2/5 legendary armor pieces.

for how expensive people say it is to get into this mage stuff, i found it quite easy and actually not that expensive to get started. i only spent around 8mil for mage gear so far and im pretty happy with how its turning out already. its nearly 2k turns less than my 1h gears and i still have a ton of room for improvements, even without changing equips.
