yep. as all the other melee profs, they always cap at your level (and ultimately at 500)

Is early Quartermaster training worth it? It seems this game is largely about equipment and supplements.

thx in advance.

Equipment is certainly a huge factor here, since if you have more equipment you can either salvage it for materials or sell it for credits in the bazaar (only if you're strapped for cash, and think about setting up a shop for low level high quality equipments (above Superior quality and maybe Exquisite) in the WTS section here on the forum) But if you're only just starting out you'll be strapped for cash if you only train the high costed trainings, so people usually recommend the XP training as you're starting off. And it's not like the trainings'll affect your equipment drop rates that greatly, seeing as https://ehwiki.org/wiki/drop_rolls it's only 2.5% , and each training only adds 0.125% . You'd be better off training Scavenger first, seeing as that increases the initial loot drop roll that gives you a chance to even get an item (otherwise you get credits or nothing) or Adept Learner so you can level up more quickly and really get into the swing of things. Save some credits to train Ability Boost when you need it, and to buy weapons later on in the game. For now, you can probably get a set of equipment from the Free Shop in the WTS portion of the forum.

Edit: Have you tried increasing the difficulty? It's in the settings when you mouse over Character in the top bar, right below Inventory. You should always play on Hard or higher, since you'll only get certain items above Normal difficulty. Besides, more XP, more credits and higher quality equipment rolls on higher settings, so...

Also, try not to purchase anything from the Item Shop in the Bazaar unless it's absolutely necessary. The forum WTS always has the best prices for all consumables, and owing to your low level, you should be able to get free consumables from a number of kind gentlemen and gentlewomen in the WTS section. Take the time to figure out your playstyle (light armor for the evade, heavy armor for the mitigation, cloth armor for the magic, mage, 1-handed, 2-handed, Niten-Ichiryu, dualwielding) and read the Advice page on the wiki: https://ehwiki.org/wiki/Advice

Was hoping QMaster would have an additive effect on the base drop rate. I guess not. Live and learn.

I did get a set of FREE equipment today, better than any drop I've ever had, but equipment has a level indicator. I thought I was doing well with my crude katana only to find out that at level 30, a level 17 katana doesn't have all that much punch anymore.

That's the problem. In half a week I could easily be past the equipment set I can't get by drops in the first place.

I have tried increasing the difficulty, because there was a prior post (2-3 pages back) that said never use Normal (because of .. shard drops? a drop I have never had) and that Hell was optimal. So I did the level 40 Arena on Hard and set my default to Hell, to have tougher Random Encounters, but that was harder than I wanted for a random. That said, gaining two levels on a single random encounter was impressive. Thinking of Nightmare for Random and Hard for Grind and such.

Oh, trust me, 2-handed isn't a playstyle that most players use, because of the inherent weaknesses it has (high burden, high interference, no block), which is why most players go for ethereal (no burden or interference, void strike) two-handed weapons, and they still lose out to 1-handed. 1-handed is the meta melee style at the moment, since it has counters (counter attacking after blocking an enemy attack) and Overwhelming Strikes (proc that increases parry and damage and stacks). At the moment, since you're still so low leveled, every single playstyle is viable as all the monsters are squishy, but eventually you'll get to a point where you'll want to switch over to either 1-handed power armor (a type of heavy armor that increases attack damage) or dual-wielding shade armor (a type of light armor that increases attack damage) and maybe Niten Ichiryu (not too sure, haven't heard much about it, but it combines 2-handed with dualwielding, but limits the weapons to only a katana and a wakizashi), after you find yourself dying too many times to multiple monsters taking two potshots at you for your one (high burden = less evade and action speed. less action speed = monsters getting to hit you more times than you hitting them). 1-handed (with a good shield with high block) and heavy armor is good because of high mitigation and the tendency for evasion and parry playstyles to not hold up against large groups of monsters, since if you get hit once or twice you'll take massive amounts of damage. Also, try using either Estocs or Rapiers for the Penetrated Armor proc, since it reduces mitigations on monsters affected, meaning you'll do more damage over time. It'll help if you ever want to increase your difficulty to let's say, Nintendo. Probably hard to get there though, since your gear is probably not too good, but you'll want to keep in mind that for 1-handed PFUDOR is not a problem (as long as you upgrade and slot the right abilities and have high-ish block). Remember that there are multiple personas that you can create, so you can probably have more melee builds than just 2-handed.

Edit: Oh, and try to use Spirit Stance when your OC gauge fills up completely. It reduces mana cost for all spells and increases damage significantly. Another plus for 1-handed is that whenever you counter a monster, you gain some amount of overcharge, leading to Spirit Stance being semi-permanent (as long as there are enough monsters to counter). For other playstyles you have to wait for the Overcharge gauge to fill up fully and use it till it runs out, then refill it and continue again.

when, roughly next week, or at least i guess. which, the same as every other year: farm different artifacts and shrine them to earn some lower-tier and a higher-tier trophies.

Depends a bit on playstyle. For 1h + shield its Fatality and Butcher only. For DW, Overpower can be somewhat usefull.

Butcher>Fatality>>>>>Overpower>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Swift Strike (bad to have for optimized build because less counter attacks)
