I can't really say much if you use random encounter as a testing ground since you don't have any overcharge yet and a few more complications that make it hard for me to give any opinion.
Then again, I don't think I would give you a good answer anyway; my experience with 1H is limited. But if you still want to compare it to other fighting style, I might be able to say something in that case.

That will be good too)) (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I have 2H Eth too, but I don't use it now, so I'm interested in comparing))

Sorry. I think long and hard what should I say... but I can't come up with anything that's not the obvious like "2H is faster" since I don't really have much information to work with... (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif) Maybe if cmal bored enough and see this, he might be able to say something. One thing I could say is that, sooner or later, you'll want use DW... Unless you're plan to tormenting yourself by melee'ing girls-marathon arena at high difficulty, you won't need to be protected... With that club, any shitty armor setup would do.

Are mages really that good? While i don't doubt their ability to nuke mobs, i wonder how sustainable it is. Somehow, i can't really imagine them lasting long even with mana pots.

Low level maging has gotten tougher than it used to be, with the missing and the resists.
But I'm level 300!
Accidently start FSM on Hell while wearing Fenrir set. Win with 7 godly mana pots instead of the usual 2.
Accidently start Beyond The Clouds with 20% mana and no great status. Win without stopping to ET.
Feels good, man.

If your usual is FSM on normal, he's pretty doable with only 1-2 average mana pots with a good mace (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif). Can't talk about Beyond the Clouds though. And I'm sure mages rip through hordes way faster.

Around what level does maging become better? I rolled magic from the start until 35-40ish. At that point it was getting painful. Chain chugging pots and losing arenas I'd actually beaten easily before.
I switched to using 2H and heavy armor and it got instantly easier. I'm 72 now and mostly using Kevlar + Scythe. I miss spell slinging though. What kind of set should I piece together before switching back? Straight Destruction staff with whatever element I want to focus on for armor?

As I see the percentage, mages dominate above lvl 200. Below lvl 200 light armor is an optimal choice. Can't really help you about the mage gear selection though, since I'm still using melee and don't have any intentions to change it. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Personally I wouldn't bother with maging until at least level 130, when you gain access to Arcane Focus. I have 96% accuracy and still get my fair share of misses with Arcane Focus on, without it maging would probably be a living hell.

For the staff, I would go with an Ebony Destruction one with high MDM, Magic Accuracy, and Elemental proficiency for your level. I wouldn't worry about ET for now. As for armor, Gossamer Elementalist armor will last you a long time; I still use it, even. Try to find pieces with high a high Elemental proficiency bonus, and good Evade and Intelligence bonuses. Element-specific Phase is probably out of your price range, and your base Elemental proficiency probably too low to carry the load for the elements you didn't specialize in.

Dumb question, when deciding which pieces of equipment to keep or sell, what is the general criteria that one should go by? I have tons of equipment cluttering up my inventory but I'm not experienced enough to tell which ones are worth keeping and which ones are junk.

I sell anything that's Crude or Fair quality, anything of any elemental mitigation, a shield with a low block chance, or physical mitigation cloth.

The monster is out fighting while you're not looking. Your monster may bring you presents. http://ehwiki.org/wiki/Monster_Lab has the details. You should pick the most fitting monster type for the name/character you choose. Giants and humanoids are the most popular choices I guess but any other type will work too.
