You playing mage now? (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

What's your impression with the new job compared to your previous one? Was it still the "Its so awesome; it cure cancer!" kind of feelings that I heard people proclaims numerous time about a year ago? (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Nah, maging is only a side project to spend my credits on right now. I'm still using my Kevlar + Mace/Rapier-Shield for pretty much everything.

With the mediocre/bad equipment I was able to gather in this short time I'm already dealing huge amounts of damage. It certainly speeds things up. I can see how with really good equipment it would blow trough everything in no time.
Another thing that's really noticeable is that supportive spells are way more useful/cheap with maging since you clear one round in 1-2 turns. One Spark of life for example will last for the whole Arena challenge while as melee you would have to recast it a few times.

If you're going to use Holy/Dark spells you need a Katalox staff.
Or a very good Redwood. But stick to Katalox.

Destruction is usually preferred, EDB-suffixed (Heimdall/Fenrir) should work better than Proficiency-suffixed (Heaven-sent/Demon-fiend) since EDB weighs more than proficiency in the damage formula.

Good sticks:
Exquisite Katalox Staff of Heimdall
Exquisite Katalox Staff of Destruction
Exquisite Katalox Staff of Destruction

There are plenty of other examples in the Equipment thread.

It won't take long for you to train proficiency, especially when it is low.

I guess I'll make a thread in WTB and see if I can get something like that.
How much would I have to pay for something good?

Any new player want to play melee must first read this paragraph out loud 3 times before asking anything melee related ... Then ask yourself if you still want to ask the same question.

FYI; mage were, literally, about a hundred times more powerful in the past, and melee were shittier by the same amount... You think they are powerful now? (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) You have no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes... (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

- My first glance at the pic, I thought you're already a mage! Your Elem prof is even higher than mine, so I see no problem whatever for you to become a mage.

- I don't see anything wrong with your prof at all.

True, but it's only 1 target at a time. There are simply far too many for that to work well in the later parts of the arena. And i can kill most monsters in 2 or 3 strikes (except rares) so the extra damage doesn't help me much. I'm better off with bleeding .

Clubs also has the advantage, unless it has been changed, that it adds to the chance to stun on a counter-attack.
I think I read that somewhere.

Also, even if you kill the monsters in 2 to 3 strikes, a stun will mean they can't hit you back for at least 1 or 2 turns that it takes you to kill them.

Bleed is even worse, since that also does it's damage over several turns meaning little advantage if you kill them in 2 or 3 strikes.

Penetrated armor basically does the same thing as stun, increase damage on a target that has it applied, but it doesn't give you the advantage that they can't hit back and the damage increase is for almost all monsters smaller than that from stun.

The best sticks easily reach into the hundreds of thousands of credits (check sushi's latest auction - 4 days left and the Katalox of Destruction is already at 100k).
Other than that, I don't really know. I got my staff as a trophy reward.

[L210] Fine Katalox Staff of Fenrir
[L219] Fine Katalox Staff of Destruction
[L254] Fine Katalox Staff of Destruction

All of these were drops. But I guess they aren't too nice.

As far as I know, it's never too late to change professions in this game. For this reason, my proficiencies are all over the place.

It's also easier to gain proficiencies the larger the gap is between your level and your proficiency.

I noticed that, when choosing to build Tanky Sword-n-Board, a fair number of people choose Light Armor over Heavy armor because of the reduced Interference/Burden and additional Resist.

However, I've noticed that Chainmail armor, which seems about in-between Leather and Plate in terms of Absorbtion/Mitigation, also seems to have Resist bonuses on it by default.

Even though Chainmail is no longer being produced (apparently? Can't seem to find a definitive answer) by the system, would it be worth trying to acquire a set of high-quality Chain over Plate/Leather?

I doubt it, go with Shade armor instead.

Right--Silk, Dragon Hide (technically merged with Leather), and Chainmail were removed from the loot table:

EDIT: What is the most desirable suffix for Shade armor--Shadowdancer? Also, is the HV Knowledge Base still useful, or have the equipment changes made it obsolete? It was really handy having a database to compare my equipment drops to...

I know they've been removed from the loot table. What doesn't seem to be clear is if they've actually been removed from the Equipment Shop's self-generation table. Surely there can't still be players selling their grandfathered-in goods.

This kind of thing happens all the time. I even saw sword chucks in bazaar today and that was removed from the loot table a long time ago...

Huh. Suppose I was misinformed regarding the equipment shop producing the occasional good of its own.

Edit: Realized I'd had this question answered earlier, so it's gone. Finding Plate with Resist is still nice, though.

Not having played one that much before, I want to know how mages play in this game. What do you do?

I couldn't figure out how to get the mana to cast much. Trying to use a staff to get mana back didn't do that well.
