What would be better than Mage for lower levels, then? In my experimentation, I've been finding that while I can usually wipe out everything in a round in 3-4 turns as a Mage, when I try Melee combat, even a round with 4 monsters can take around 20 turns to win.
You're just about to run into a huge difficulty spike. The curve starts being noticeable around 150 and monster PL starts growing exponentially. Only past 250 does the difficulty stop rising so much, but even then, strategies that worked at level 160 definitely won't work there, or anywhere in between.
It's true that mage can be the best method to clear fast before level 150 or so, on lower difficulties, but that's mainly because the monsters are just so pathetic. (It's also a bit more difficult for new players to get used to how mage works compared to melee, which is why 2h is usually recommended).
With decent equipment, a 1h player should be able to play at Nintendo pretty easily around level 220, IWBTH by 250, and PF on all arenas by 300. But for mage to be able to handle Nintendo or anything higher, at any level before 310, you'll need a quite substantial amount of firepower, as well as some IW on staff and armor, otherwise you'll be forced to waste time on Curing way too often. You'll also be deep in the red with not-inexpensive mana potions, even if you happen to have proficiency matching your level.

Instant death Q.Q Double spell crit right after out of stun Q.Q
So what you're saying is that you forgot to recast Spark?

Oh and when it comes to THAT particular fool and his ilk, I always keep Weaken on his ass. Just so he can't crit me. Critter control is important on Hell+ and absolutely crucial on IWBTH+
Or you could attack the dangerous monsters first. If they're dead before they can use SP attack there's no need to waste time on Weaken. Besides, if you use Spark, it's a lot easier to just take the damage and Cure/recast Spark if you're forced to. 1h definitely shouldn't have to use Weaken at your level.

put on your first IA either protection or Spirit shield, you really dont need SOL on lower difficulties just keep your buffs up and youre fine.. once you will be using Spirit shield you dont need to be paranoia anymore^^
Protection is the worst choice for IA, since you gain the least mana savings and the least turns saved, due to long buff duration and low cost.

I would recommend to pick Haste as IA.
If there's any chance of running out of HP at all, I'd much prefer Spark.

I heard that niten is not good for my level, but these weapons combined give me the highest attack power.
Offensive styles like Niten might work at low levels, but starting around level 150, monster PL will start increasing exponentially. 1h will give you the survivability necessary to play higher difficulties which Niten doesn't have - which is necessary before you start thinking about offense.
