Which one do I use for main hand?
I only have that shield for now, I guess I need a Force Shield?
Do I use heavy or light armor? I suppose Shade and Power?
The 1H fighting style deals damage by focusing down one enemy at a time and survives by blocking or parrying most of the incoming damage while mitigating the rest. The recommended setup for 1H is rapier, force shield, and heavy armor.
Why Rapier? There are three types of
equipment procs: bleeding wound, penetrated armor, and stun. As of patch 0.82, bleeding wound is underwhelming, penetrated armor provides a sizable damage increase, and the 1H fighting style already has stuns
built-in. Thus, penetrated armor is the best of the three equipment procs and the only 1H weapon with penetrated armor is the rapier. Note that there are rumors of patch 0.83 mitigation changes (lower mitigations and higher HP on monsters) which might upset the balance of equipment procs.
Why Force Shield?Block chance is by far the most important stat on shields and force shields have the potential to have highest block chance. This means that a good buckler or kite shield might only have the block chance of a mediocre force shield.
Why Heavy Armor?Cloth armor has no attack damage bonus and low mitigations, light armor has some attack damage bonus and medium mitigations, and heavy armor has the highest attack damage bonus and highest mitigations. If your shield isn't amazing or your level isn't high enough, you will want to use a mixture of plate and power equipment.
