@neochef0 : Think over putting at least 1 AP in Poison, it will make your fights significantly easier. (5/5 recommended as you will be using many times that spell). Haste and Slow are also useful - especially during encounters with Manbearpig and the others on RoB.

a mix between melee and magic is most of the time not that good (for lower leveled characters with low proficiencies). Especially if you have weapons and armour with high interference , because each point interference will drop your magic damage

To build DMG you need a decent staff/maxed proficiency and by maxed I mean : your level - ~5 or better and AP put in elemental rating skills or other equivalents of ratings, spells you want to use.

Alright, so even reading all the posts on this thread I'm still currently confused on how to respec my character's skills. Essentially, I use my skill set normally for grinding, but I'm having trouble versus the Growing Storm arena challenge and higher, and the bosses pretty much eat me alive. I need some advice which magic skills to dump (if any), currently I have the following teched:

Poison - 5 pts (maxed)
Weaken - 5 pts (maxed)
Haste - 5 pts (maxed)
Shadow Veil - 5 pts (maxed)
Bewilder - 5 pts (maxed)
Shield - 1 pt (maxed)
Barrier - 1 pt (maxed)
Regen - 1 pt (maxed)

My goal is to tech up my HP as much as possible so that my health potions will be more effective in battle. I usually dual wield a Katana/Waki in the Arena with Light damage absorb armor. I usually debuff bosses/minibosses and buff myself with Haste/Shield/Barrier.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Absorb is useless for anything but cake setting, Barrier is useless, and use SV, is a lot better. Forget light if isn't good kevlar, prefer high evade silk. Niten at your level shouldn't a great thing especially if the prof isn't capped, prefer either 1HS (good block) or 2W (with good parry)

do not use niten at your level, your spells will lose prof (you need to keep on under 25 of interference)
use rapier and dagger slaughter/balance combo
use only mana potions and bring a scroll of barrier i auto touse at le last two rounds

don't use barrier
at every round weaken all monster but one that you will kill for first
use shield, do not use shadow veil, neither haste
minibosses need to be taken down for first
proc penetrated armor and use poison then kill the rest of mobs (slimes and tentacle monsters for first)

launch regen or cure only if really low of hp nad never at the end of round hoping for second winds

Parts of this are not good advice.

Shield is useless except on Cake setting. Haste/Shadow Veil are useful, especially when going through the higher level arenas.

Regen should be used as a substitute for Health Potions (along with Cure I and Cure II.

Barrier is useless.

Weaken should only be used against boss monsters that you might face in Item Worlds, Grindfests, in arenas, or in the Ring of Blood...it should not be used on every monster as that wastes too much mana.

actually shield is a decent skill if your flee is low/average and if you are not a mage who can one shot mobs.

edit: also it's probably the cheapest supportive skill at his level. So even if you normally don't use it, you can use it to grind proficiency

@Draylof: I'm almost the same level as you and I do arenas as full mage (no melee, just staff and clothes for elem proficiency and evade) and to clear Apocalypse Soon I use like 4-5 potions, sometimes less ? My elemental proficiency is around 70 and fire rating 13 %. First few waves of mobs I do on sole regen and when mini-bosses appear I add heal Potions which usually are sufficient to cover DMg which I get during 2 castings of fire AOE spell.

Wow, that's pretty impressive, if you don't mind me asking, what skills/abilities did you tech? It seems like in this game, melee types pretty much get raped.

take in account that if you are melee DW or OH, while you kill mob one by one, the others normals will get lots of critics and damage
weaken should be used on groups larger than 2 and bewilder too on minibosses

on lower level haste and shadow veil eat too much MP while shield combined with weaken will protect alot and it cost half mp giving lots of proficiency (also haste and SV for being effective require 10 AP while shield require 1 AP (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) damn cheap!!!)

IA is useless for mages, unless the IA 1, for running SV without casting over and over.
