You don't need any forging experience to salvage gear, just that someone with max experience will regain 90% of the mats vs 80% for the inexperienced (rounded down). The difference between forging an Exquisite vs a Legendary gear, the Legendary will require all HG mat while Exquisite will need LG and MG mats (at the beginning), the bindings required for either gear remain constant. Thus you will get back between 80~90% of the mats and bindings depending on your forging experience.

You need forge experience when you salvage forged equipment, because it decreases your forge's experience equal to the amount of experience that you earned from upgrading the item with material. It is regardless of who forged it; you or someone else.
You can't salvage forged equipment if you don't have enough experience to be decreased.

Salvaging an item with upgrades will also return 80% of the materials spent on upgrading, rounded down. The return rate will increase up to 90% with 50 forge level. This also reduces the forge's EXP equal to how much the upgrades on the equipment piece would have increased it.

I've done the first few on PFUDOR with my 2h-Heavy set... but right now I'm more worried about increasing my 1h skill & Deprecating proficiency... so I'm using my 1h-Arcanist set.

Are you sure this is true? If you have no experience in forging you will get back 80% of the mats forged in but there was no mention of anyone not being able to salvage a forged gear with no experience in forging. I've read the wiki regarding forging many times and I understand that there is a penalty for salvaging forged gear but there is no mention of being unable to salvage forged gear without forge experience. I took this to mean that there cannot be any negative forging experience and if you do salvage forged gear, getting back 80% of the mats is the bare minimum (rounded down) regardless of one's forging experience or the lack thereof.

Too late for me to test whether the above is true or not, maybe forge a crude gear and have someone with no forge experience try to salvage it?

Problem is I'm not the one who forged it, therefore I don't know.

So what should I do with all the exquisites? I've been just locking those for a collection ;p

What I personally do is salvage common-tier exquisites and sell rare-tier ones to the Bazaar. I do the same with magnificents too, but I actually bother to look at those to see if they're worth keeping or auctioning.

so what's the recommended LV for 1H? (300lv +?)

I switch 1H when I start to want to clear everything on PFUDOR. T&T PFUDOR kept shitting on me with 2H, so I switch

It feels like since not too long ago it became noticeably harder to get high-grade materials from exquisites, and conversely, much easier to get low-grades. Maybe since 0.77 or 0.78 -- both of these patches had some loot rebalancing. I don't know; maybe I'm just imagining it. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/faint.gif)

a locked equip is an item that don't appear in your sell list but only in your inventory and when you decide to change an equip, you can do that by clicking on the lock that is at the left of the name of the equip: if you want to sell/trade it, you first have to unlock it by reclicking on the lock (that meanwhile became yellow to highlight it).
the link of the item is available in the popup that appear hovering with the mouse on its name and clicking the button 'C' on your keyboard: you can make it clickable via the 'insert link' icon above the space where you write your comment

Though PMI is low (mmax-0.2) other stats are good. (MMI mmax, STR mmax, DEX lmax, END lmax)
