I agree. But, when PK678353 asked whether there was an EDB breakpoint at which monsters that are highly-resistant to cold stop being so much of an issue, I responded with "no" based on personal experience. I can do IWBTH arenas with my wind set (so forge upgrades aren't necessary; in fact, I have only ever done 16 forge upgrades), but I can't
faceroll through them. (IMG:[

style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) They are slow-going and require liberal use of Imperil. When I look at my freyr gear, I can't improve my damage significantly further just by buying new pieces. If wind-resistant monsters are to stop being an issue for me on IWBTH, I will have to turn to the forge and damage perks (which are unrealistic) and/or continue relying on Imperil, and that means PK678353 will also have those options when it comes to dealing with cold-resistant monsters. And who knows, maybe even after copious forge upgrades and damage perks, resistant monsters will still be an issue on IWBTH, but then I look at hito and tend to think otherwise.
I'm sure holy/dark mages have their own challenges as well, but with the way everyone talks about them, they seem to have a much easier overall time. My fenrir and heimdall suits aren't really good, so I can't fairly compare the three styles.
Yes I agree but I don't think I was addressing that point in my replies (probably because I agreed and was just elaborating on the latter stuff in your post (IMG:[

The "monster sample" rarely changes since there's basically everything in every level range now.
Not sure how easy Hito has it but you'd hope he's doing well considering his forging his worth more than his gear. There's a reason why the "most effective" players are using holy/dark (IMG:[

The standards for good shift with time and what equipment you've already got. I actually suspect that that's part of the ever present complaints that drops always get worse it seems. I remember us getting quite excited over a piece of Superior Shadowdancer gear that Ichy dug up back when Shade was new, went for several hundred thousand at auction. It would fetch at most 75k now.
The thing about Destruction is that you either have to be high enough level for the fast scaling on MDB to really kick in or have a really good Destruction staff for it to actually beat out competing staves with other suffixes that are a tier higher in quality and still cheaper. I picked up a cheap Ex Destruction Katalox at auction, then realized that my Mag Fenrir gave better Holy damage due to better EDB/Prof (near max MDB on the Fenrir certainly didn't hurt there). Mediocre Destruction just gets killed by midrange specific element, and good Destruction in turn gets beat by top-flight stuff (why I use a Nif Staff, I can't afford a Destruction that can legitimately beat that thing). Destruction really does have quite a high bar to clear when you can often pick up a Magnificent X Staff of Y for 5k at auction. Only very good stuff is going to be better than the available alternatives (specific element still wins that particular element), and stuff that good is actually rather rare and expensive.
That's half the point of this thread, watching other people throw ideas at each other and see what sticks.
Yes. Good ole supply + demand
Mmmm which staff is best for you depends on your existing armour. (Remember it's multiplicative damage calculation.) When the armour focuses on high MDB (int/wis), the EDB route is nice for staff and vice versa. In your case since you had high overall quality in armor (exqs+ iirc), you basically needed a "high overall quality" staff so that makes sense for your nif gear.
I can't say the same for your dark/holy since I haven't seen the set. Maybe your set prioritized MDB hence the EDB staff was the better pick? I can't say.
IMO Kata destruction staves are dirt cheap now considering what they were worth before (a few magnitudes). Not sure about picking up a Mag staff for 5k at an auction though (I usually see the Mag ones go for decent when it's a decent suffix). Most bidders go higher than that for the salvage chance alone.
