There are a few responses in this very thread regarding the "optimal stat" distribution. Strength/Endurance/Dexterity (their raw value should be above your level) > Agility (if survival is an issue)/Wisdom > Intelligence.

Your equipment is simply not good enough for that difficulty. You could rent gear in the Auto Equip Rental Shop or play in Nintendo until you drop better items. A Rapier or a Shortsword + Force Shield is what you are looking for. Ideally, you want the "of Slaughter" suffix on those. Then a full set of Power armour.

I strongly advice you to look into the Monasterbation and HV Utils scripts. They should make your life much easier as well.

For me, this is my stats distribution when I was 1H melee.
Strength: 1.1 level
Dexterity: 1.1 level
Agility: 0.95 level
Endurance: 1.1 level
Intelligence: 0.85 level
Wisdom: 0.95 level

Your stats are too low. Like Ramaki said, you need better equips.
Check auto rental store and Monsterbation script
Make sure you have HVutil script installed to run Monsterbation.

The above situation is much better after Spark Of Life, but I can't find any recommendations on the selection of Primary attributes. How can I optimize the sword and shield combination?
Thank you so much~

I'd suggest average your PAB except for int. You may use others' suggestion as well, they don't make much difference imho.

And it seems you forget to activate your heavy armor ability. Those grant you max HP/MP and 3 types of damage mit. Without those you are like playing without gears.
You need to train some Mastery Points, all 6 extra slots requires 10 points. Also I see you put Sorcery on, reset it as it is useless for your style.

edit: something to add: considering that you are not a donator, and the cost of training Mastery Points, you probably want to reset the element shield as well as mind control to allow yourself some extra slot for the 1H and heavy armor abilities.

Since we've been talking about stats: mmit, resist, and dark resist are all extremely valuable vs schoolgirls once you're starting into those arenas (before you can plow through them). A while back I checked damage logs to figure out why I was getting bopped so hard and noticed a ton of magic damage, especially dark. I knew that player monsters were more fire and holy, so I re-checked system monster attacks and said 'oh yeah, that's right, duh'.
[and in case anyone else was wondering: the "spirit" columns in monsterbation damage logs show the hp that would have been lost but was instead converted to sp damage by spirit shield]

Also worth noting that, on average, resist is more impactful than mmit. This is more pronounced at lower resist values... for example: 10% resist is 14.265% damage reduction, 50% is 58.125%, 70% is 73.395%. That combined with experimenting with stat values and the large amount of magic damage from sgs is what led me to invest much more in wis than agi (with heavy armor).

Speaking of monsters, when you get to choose whether the skill is magical or physical, you can mix and match any of the options, right? So I could have a dragon with basic piercing attack and mp1 skill, magical crushing for mp2, and physical fire for sp?
Yes to all. Had struck out with my initial searches, but just now thought to try "magical crushing". Not the first time it's been asked; would be nice to add a sentence to the wiki.

Are Magnificent+ items the only thing worth selling to other players? I've been dumping most of my superior or lower equipment to the bazaar but still have most exquisite tier items.

Only if they're good enough. exquisite can't sell.
Somebody would like to use their own equips instead of rental ones. If you have good prefix + suffix + max PABs + low level, someone might likely buy it (depending on the number of players using this play style)

Edit:
I personally believe good low-level (300-350 level) Magnificent mage clothes sell. No soulfuse is always good for the transition phase.

You probably won't even sell Magnificient or Legendary gear, unless they have specific prefixes and suffixes and come with great stat rolls and/or are at least somewhat usable as transitional gear. Ask yourself whether you would want to buy that item and why.

Here's a great resource to gauge if your item might be worth something: (from Superlatanium's auction thread)
Here's someone who gives away Magnificient and even Legendary gear for free: 天命不又

If you don't have it already, I'd recommend to install the Live Percentile Ranges Script which helps to appraise items by showing how good the stats rolls are.

One more question. I've been saving my gold and have reached a point where I am unsure what I should spend it on. Gear appears to be a good choice but I prefer to only use dropped gear (too much like cheating for me.) Training or upgrades for my current gear seem like good choices but they both would require much of my store to get any benefit from. Would it be a better option to just save for hath perks?

Yes. Dæmon Duality I is extremely good. Forging physical gear (assuming you're physical) isn't super effective until you put large amount of credits into it.

DD1 is definitely worth it. You can at least forge to level 5, which requires no binding.
You can start to prepare a budget for the mage at your level.
If you do, then you'll find yourself not having enough credits XD.
