You can call me blind because of it. I saw the post about auction delay just yesterday in spite of my quite frequent visit to the forum.

I respect Super for this great work on the forum. But information at least at signature would be more helpful imho. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

what happen to ur computer?
Something to do with the motherboard, it just powered itself off one day and refused to turn on again. (Without access to the hard drive I couldn't use my auction-building userscript, and I only got it back today.) The computer was sufficiently old, and repair would have been quite expensive, so it went onto the junk heap.

The auctions run on a virtual private server, not a dedicated one or something I personally own. I already had the VPS from some puny H@H, and I realized that putting a small website on top of it as well would only result in a negligible amount of extra load.

Hi.

Would it be possible if we could enable the notification from the auction website? Like checking a box when we proxy bid, or maybe a small form to type the same command than on forums. I'd like it if it wasn't brought to everyone's attention that I want notifications, due to possible trolls. Or even better: it being done automatically for proxy bids, because as such we most likely need to be informed.

Yeah I know I'm very edgy when it comes to privacy.

EDIT:

QUOTE(Superlatanium @ Jul 22 2017, 16:59) *

I don't call that complaints, I call that selfish and utterly flawed+biased whining.
Worse than that: this is now encouraging forum bids over the proxy bids. His "point" is complete (and barely understandable) bullshit: the only one guessing is the manual bidder who tries to guess how much the proxy bidder has set, while the proxy bidder just bids above everyone else, period. "Oh, let's guess? Did he proxy bid 1M? Let's bid 1M to win the bid even if he did proxy bid 1M (way) before me."
THAT, is an actual issue. THAT is unfair, especially for the proxy bidders who aren't necessarily there for the end of the auction.
A bid, proxy or not, remains a bid. Proxy is only a convenience to avoid spamming and getting a blood rush in the eyes. And as such, a proxy bid should be "first bidder, getter".

The only real problem that proxy bidding could be setting, should be proxy bidder VS proxy bidder, since neither know the amount of each other, and the second guy proxies the same amount than the first. In which case it is legitimate to ask yourself who should be the one to set the bid.

Blame the bidders who just post and can't read the instructions that say "click on the damn big button".

Sometimes they purposely don't click the button so that you won't know you've been outbid looking at the first page.

Ah yeah, I forgot that the auctions are full of lamers who'd deserve being punished. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
...
Easy way to trick the trickers: you click the big button yourself from time to time to refresh the page, and you register a notification aswell. I don't get any surprise that way.

That being said, even if there was an auto-update, you'd still have to refresh the page regularly Scremaz. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Maybe we can open a thread where people can report such unethical people.
Then their names will be added into a blacklist on the first post to shame them.

Name and shame is considered to be no good in many communities. That'd likely bring in flame wars, miscellaneous accusations, other stupid behaviors and all. And go fetch impartial ways to determine who is unethic and who isn't...

Like I said the other day, we should rather think about ways to discourage such behaviors, rather than "curing" them after the deed is done. Not an easy thing to do with auctions in general, which by tradition bring in no good.

You can now enable notifications from the website itemlist.

(That said, if you can figure out exactly how much you value a certain potential item before the end of the auction, you'll perform better and shouldn't need notifications, if you do it right; bidding more after your maximum gets outbid is probably not in your interest if your first value estimation wasn't biased)

It's trivially easy for a proxy bidder to circumvent such issues: as I've said many times, it's in bidders' best interests to bid uneven amounts, and to avoid the nice round numbers like "1m", no matter whether they're proxy bidding or competing against a proxy bidder. Also, +50k or +3% is almost always very little.

That said, I agree that in the case that a manual bid exactly equals a proxy bid, it's more fair when the person who bid earlier (the proxy bidder) comes out on top. That's how I set things up initially, but it caused an uproar here and many people PMd me in confusion (for example) with "I bid 1m in this post, why does it show this other guy as winning, when he also only bid 1m?"

The last update time is displayed prominently in the auction post for that reason; if it seems out of date, anyone can click the button to fix it, it's really easy, and I would think wouldn't be an issue for anyone checking an auction thread at end time hoping to win an item.

I guess I could figure out a way to set up a job that activates near end time and pings the script every couple minutes to do an update, but since all it takes to accomplish the same thing is for anyone to press that big Update button, I think I have better things to do...
QUOTE(decondelite @ Aug 13 2017, 11:59) *

Some ways do exist (for example: give people who've been winning an item for a while a discount, give people who win the item only after being top bidder for a few minutes at the end a fee) but I'm thinking it would probably be pretty confusing trying to get the message across, especially when more than a few who participate aren't great at English.
