QUOTE(Cyriel @ Apr 29 2009, 00:15) *

For addition, the general anti vehicle bombs in warzones currently occupied by nato and / or mixed countries is the nasty fuckers they plant next to the road.

Pressure plate, bomb in the sand next to the road, vehicle drives over, blast hits directly from the side, big fucking mess.

The dutch call it a "Bermbom" and it's the most primitive trap you'll find in those parts. Also, that mostly explains the lack of burn damage, because it's a "household" explosive, and not military grade. (well, not usually.)

Bomb explodes, a lot of dirt and crap long the road hit the car first before the initial blast wave, then comes the after heat from the explosion itself. the dirt and other stuff gets smacked into the car, causing minor kinetic damage, followed by the heat and shrapnel from the container. The dirt acts as the primary dampener for the heat (eg: inefficient) so the larger part of the damage is from the shrapnel itself.

Also most types of assault vehicles have (like k8 mentioned) open sides, bottoms or small openings on any side of the vehicle. No idea why they did this exactly, but the dutch counterpart has the same openings (add variation of course)

So that (i hope) explains the fact why there's hardly any burn damage or scorch marks on vehicle carcasses after they are retrieved. Also, the results vary greatly when higher yield explosives are used (military grade) etc etc.

You may not be such a meat puppet after all. Strangley enough you know your explsives. Do I even want to know why?

Not that I find this thread pointless or anything, but...

I'm getting awfully sick of being preached to by people in the military. Maybe if you guys were more civil and less soapboxy, you'd get better reactions out of people. But to be honest, every time I read a post like yours, k9, or hear my military friends get snooty and holier-than-thou because they got shot at and have seen people die, I really pay less and less attention. Pretentiousness in the military is bad in every sense of the word.

I'm sorry for your loss, even if you're hardly the person most hurt from all this. I understand that what you are doing is for our country. But for fuck's sake, it doesn't make you better than anyone, and it doesn't give you a such deeper insight into the world so as to make you act like you're fucking 'enlightened'. If anything, going about, trying to cite 'deep lines' like "You could never understand the pain I went through" and so on is something I'd more expect from a high school student who sits in a dark room and frets over his middle-class American lifestyle as though he had to get up every morning to make shirts in a sweatshop, eat one meal a day and suffer from some terminal illness.

I can only hope for the military's sake that you were always someone who looked down his nose at people, so that you can't be easily given as an example of a military sponge, using your supposed position of suffering to put yourself on some empathetic platform.

tl;dr You're fucking pretentious, I feel bad for your friends who died, but not you in the slightest. Don't BAAAW at us when you weren't the one who died in the explosion, douchebag, you're effectively the one who got off the easiest.

Or even better, I get so tired of hearing self abosrbed pussy's pacifists like yourself, who don't have the realization that I have EARNED my rights with sweat and blood, I didn't ever take them for granted as many such as yourself do. So what does that make you if i preach off a soapbox, when you in turn by posting something so long in response?

Hypocritical post is hypocritical.

Free Speech Zone. You might as well just write in 'pussy' instead of making some feeble attempt at humor, crossing it out.

You're putting words in my mouth, what with the taking rights for granted, but that's pretty much to be expected. Plus, saying that you've earned your rights somehow seems twisted, given the context of the situation.
Wait, did I even say anything about a person's rights? I'm pretty sure I didn't, so if anything, that's going off in a random-fuck direction. Nothing about pacifism or refusing to fight, either.

I'll also have to remember that anything more than a paragraph, or more well-written than your previous wall'o'texts, apparently equals a soapbox.

I'll admit to being pretentious, but I don't recall saying anything that would fall under hypocritical.

Edit: @noahbody: Yup, I'm long-winded and put far too much thought/time into my posts. That's what tl;dr at the bottom is for.

It's also the reason why I've been here for months on end, but have less than 500 posts.

Sure.

People i know went there. Luckily, all of them came back in one piece, and thats where i got the larger part of what i know now.

That, and i wrote an essay once for my physics studies about kinetic energy, using explosives as the main example.

At the same time saying you understand something without actually experiencing it is a dangerous thing. Do you really know what it's like to have a comrade and a friend who you were playing cards with the night before get blown up doing a mission? Do you have an sense of waking up that morning and hearing explosions just outside and having to throw on battle gear and be ready for a possible fight? Unless you've been there you can't assume.

Look I don't agree with a lot of k9's antics in this forum, but some things you see, some things you experience in the line of duty will change you and your perspectives. I'm sure he reads my words as those of an Air Force pussy, but I've been to a war zone and I've seen and been around terrible things. Definitely not to his extent but when someone who sat next to you on the plane on the way over kissing a photo of his family goes back to that family in a casket, it really makes you look at things a bit differently.

And again, don't always assume because the few people you've come in contact with in the military are standoffish that we all are. That's like saying all black people are thieves because two black guys robbed you at gunpoint. A sample of a group does not mark the whole said group.

Not to split hairs here, but I didn't say I understood, nor anything similar to it. That's not the issue, to me. It's the attitude and air of arrogance that I consistently seem to encounter amongst soldiers.

I'm in full agreeance that the actions of a few shouldn't be interpreted as the actions of the whole. But unfortunately, it's very difficult to absolve a group of assumptions when the only experience you have with them is the worst of their members.

I admit that in terms of all the possible career choices out there you are probably more likely to see arrogance from military members. The main reason for that is you get that feeling like I must be something special to pretty much cheat death. "I went to a place where people die everyday in gunfire and explosions and I came back unharmed. I must be some special shit." In fact one thing you're told when you get back from a deployment is to try to shut that little voice up when you get back home. A lot of military members make it home from a deployment and think they are indestructible and go out and buy motorcycles and shit and then end up dead from arrogance. "If I can survive the Taliban I can sure as hell survive a Suzuki."

But believe me, there is sensibility among members of that group. Not everybody joins the military because they have a thirst for battle and think they are king shit. Not everybody joins so they can grunt with the guys and down beers. Some people join because they feel like they owe it to their country to give something back. Some join because they need the money for college, the job reference or just need something immediately after high school. And I personally joined because I intend on becoming a politician one day and I want to say to voters "I've served the people of this nation before and I'd like to do so again." I'd hope in the meantime I'd retain my sensibilities.

See, that's understandable. And I can't agree with the sentiment at all, but I can see how coming back alive could give someone a big head.

I hadn't thought of it that way before, since survival arrogance is somewhat of a foreign concept to me.

Oh, wait... I wouldn't.

Others will.

On that note, the people that always scream "violence never solved anything" go in the wishful thinking pool imo. No offense, but naked force has resolved more issues throughout history than peaceful debate.

Still, it's not good and yes there are alternatives, but these are the numbers boys and girls.
