It's 100 on the nose

I have 12 Magic tanks

S 30
D 25
A 27
E 25
I 33
W 31

I dunno what it changes buy my profficency is 15.23

The twelve tanks makes me feel a little better, as does the disparity in stats, but not enough. Three ability points in MP Tank and 8/10 (Int/Wis) attribute levels should allow me to cast MORE spells not roughly the same. I'm putting points and experience towards staying even, and that does not seem right.

I would suggest that the calculation for spell cost increase be re-done, but unless done perfectly, that would swing things too far in favor of magic users. Hopefully Tenboro will work things out...

As for proficiency, mine is 28.29 (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It was redone, and it's scaling is fine. He has slightly more magic-centric stats than you which makes his tanks count for more, three additional magic tanks won't make you god.

But I want to be God...
Anyway, we are talking about a +9% difference in MP...
Unless the scaling system is more complicated than I think, I'm fairly certain that one can eventually get ahead of the curve with time and lot of levels, but it is brutal at the lower levels. A jump in a spell cost from 5 to 6 is much larger of a change than from 10 to 11.
I can imagine instances when such a jump would reduce the amount of spells you can cast rather than keep the number relatively constant...

As for strategies for full warriors and even mages I presume, what I suggest is going for the fastest but most potent kills first, e.g. Level 20 Rabid Hamster is better to kill than a Level 18 Amphibious Sperm Whale. However, bosses are always a priority as some of them can do A LOT more damage than the rest of the mob. In any case let me point out things to look for:
  • What's the monster that will hit you for more with their spells. How much mana they have left.
  • How often you might miss that enemy, though it might be based on luck there are some you might miss more.
  • How much damage that monster can take.

Best way would be to kill the weakest, but if you know there's an enemy that can hurt you a lot and it's mana bar is still not depleted, kill that first, the weaker monsters will not hurt you as much anyways.

This may sound dumb but what is the percent/damage increase of poison when it is increased per level? Unlike the flame tongues skill, the poison skill doesn't give an indicator.
Also I've tested poison magic over a variety of monsters and it seems that all monsters have the same resistance to it, but they gain more resistance to it as their level increases. (Level 1 poison on lvl 10 blue slime = 10 damage per turn. Level 1 poison on level 15 blue slime = 8 damage per turn).

This is where having weaken completely changes the strategy. In that case, you want to weaken everyone then kill the mob before hitting the boss because you waste less MP keeping everyone weakened. You also build up your overcharge on the hordes and can possibly finish the boss with a one-hit full blast.
The strategy works wonders. There is a reason pretty much everyone suggests getting weaken immediately.

Am I the only one who stacks shield and weaken? I feel that shield does not give me the same punch that weaken does. I know some of that is due to the disparity in proficiencies (29.39 vs. 10.32), so I hope things get better with time, but it currently seems like I am wasting MP on a spell that runs out quicker and gives me less results. Any thoughts from someone else over level 40?

Anyway, we are talking about a +9% difference in MP..

Question: is it a +9% difference, or is it (+(3%) * +3%) * +3%) difference? Meaning, is it precisely 109% greater, or is it 109.27% greater? While the variation is small, it makes a reasonable difference once you've filled up a dozen tanks. I've been wondering about this for a while; I did my own quick n' dirty calculator in GTK+ since Sonic's doesn't run on *nix platforms, but I haven't added tanks/power/etc to it yet, partly out of laziness and partly because of this question (and the other "how does it round" questions).

The abilities that increase stats and exp/creds that you can train with ability points are additive, so it's 9% for 3 points in mp tank and 9% exp for 3 points in the experience one. If they work with the auras like sonic's calc shows they do, then they stack onto the auras, so if you get 10% exp from an aura, you take the number you'd get after the aura and then add another 9% from 3 points in the exp ability, which also makes the credit ability slightly more potent, though I don't know of any confirmation of how the abilities are affected by auras.

You had to use Elixirs to get through a "Road Less Traveled"? I haven't tried it since Weaken was refangled, but I was able to get through it without resorting to anything over Superior Potions when I did...

Finally beat Road Less Traveled. The credits from winning barely even cover the 3 blown attempts and lost items. Mostly due to multiple bosses on the last wave or a rapetastic max level Manthra that never seems to freaking miss.

A full SP 100% overcharge Spirit Blast barely chews through half of those damn Manthras. Makes me question if I should go after them or the other 5 monsters first.

Care to share?

Sure. The code's attached. Like I said, it's pretty quick and dirty, didn't bother to do anything right, just wanted a quick way to enter the numbers and see what the stats would be. Released under the WTFPL/public domain/I don't care license.

Edit: added a newer version that saves your progress and handles HP/MP/SP/OC tanks.

I can usually get through four rounds of Grindfest on Normal with no items, but I only have a small amount of HP left and the fifth round sees my death after a few turns.

My next challenge at the Arena is Graduation. I haven't tried to clear it yet, but it shouldn't be any problem. Don't know why I haven't. I can go straight through the previous stages in one session.
