You learn something new every day, and today was no exception for me.

Meet Monster Number 51,
Castella. I admit I had never heard of it until I tried looking it up today. It's a light sponge cake with a simple taste that appeals to the Japanese.
Castella is a specialty dessert of Nagasaki, brought to Japan by the Portuguese (thus its name,
Castella, from the Portuguese word for "Castile"). Back then, it was an exclusive snack for the aristocracy because sugar was a rarity; only obtainable from the trading port of Nagasaki. Mass production of this dessert only started during the Meiji period.
