This is weird, but my first exposure to anime was as a toddler watching half the lineup of Nick Jr. This was around 1988 to 89 when it started and they didn't care so much about educating kids as just distracting them for a couple of hours. It was mostly localized kiddy anime like Noozles, Adventures of the Little Koala, the Little Bits and my personal favorite at the time Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics. I didn't have a concept of other countries and cultures at the time, but I definitely knew they were different from a lot of cartoons. The mouth movements were weird and everybody seemed to lump their sentences together. Pretty much telling punctuation to go fuck itself.
It wasn't until a couple years later that I discovered slightly more mature cartoons done in the same style. The first being Voltron. Then Cartoon Network came along and showed Vampire Hunter D. Then Toonami became a thing and the rest is history.
In summation, you could say Nickelodeon was responsible for putting me in the path to becoming a Nihongophile.
