Uchūsen Sagittarius/Space Sagittarius, an old series that aired in the 80s. I assume it's extremely obscure. It played on a children network in Quebec and from what I understand, it was mostly known there and in Europe, notably in Romania (apparently). In French it was known instead as "Les Aventuriers de l'Espace" (Adventurers of Space).
The characters were for the most part animal-looking humanoids (among other things, one of the characters was pretty much a cactus. A singing cactus.) but behind what appeared to be a lil' kid show, it turned out to be a shockingly mature anime about friendship, war, danger of nuclear weapons, environment, slavery, alcoholism, loss, homesickness, greed and other themes. It also had a heavy share of surrealism and nightmare fuel including a few rare times where things got bloody. To some it might be really heavy on the tearjerker aspect at times too. I was like 6 or 7 when I watched this and some images stuck in my mind long after I saw them.
I watched all 77 episodes a few years ago and while some episodes were a bit bland and some personality quirks were rather redundant at times, it was pretty good overall.
