Technically the very first one was Nils no Fushigi no Tabi, but then again I was still a child when it aired and didn't even know it was called anime, so I'm not counting it. The first one that fits would therefore be Cowboy Bebop, I think.

The first anime I've watched was Pokemon. I was around 4 at the time and watched anything my parents bought for me. Since it was bundled with many western cartoons, I thought Pokemon also counts as a cartoon until I fully understood the term 'Anime'.

I know for certain it was one of the animes from the Saturday Anime block on the scifi channel. The ones that left the biggest impression on me as a child were Demon City Shinjuku and Vampire Hunter D, so I think one of those may have been first.

The first ones i watched, thinking back, were yu-yu hakusho and rurouni kenshin.
Though i just thought they were really good cartoons at the time, way better than normal saturday morning cartoon tripe.
I had no idea japan even existed for quite some time.
