I just remember my mom rushing me to get out of the library and I just picked up whatever was in front of me, happened to be this anime on tape. I'm sure I've seen anime around randomly on TV(or Cable at a relatives house)- but this was the one that opened me up to anime, and the mispronunciation of common Japanese words.

Pokémon when I was a kid. When I actually started to watch series, it was Kämpfer. My taste has not gotten better.

My very first one didn't really get me into anime. But Lucky Star did.

Pretty Cure. I guess it's not surprising that magical girls is one of my favorite genres now.

I don't really remember the first anime I saw (maybe Saint Seiya? I was in my kindergarten age at that time)

But two of the most "eye-opening" anime to me were Revolutionary Girl Utena and Neon Genesis Evangelion. You can watch them like typical school-life (with sword fighting!) anime (Utena) and robot anime (Evangelion), or dig deeper into the psychological and philosophical topics littering here and there in both animes. I got caught in the latter case and become deeply amused in complexity of human mind since then.

I watched a bunch of random anime here and there as a kid like Pokemon, Sailor Moon and My Neighbor Totoro as a kid. However, my "first" anime I actually sought out to watch all the way through was Samurai Champloo.
