If you don't count Moomin (most people don't for some reason, even though it was animated in Japan) then I think was Pokemon back in 2000 (when it first aired where I live).

Edit: I forgot about Sailor Moon. I watched that in the late 90's.

Evangelion back when it aired on SBS here in Australia in the 90's, or maybe Tekkaman when I found out my breakfast cartoons were from Japan.

The first anime that I KNEW was anime when I watched it, was Ranma 1/2 (hated it, but strangly it did still get me into anime, and I started to watch other stuff I liked much better).
But, technically speaking astro boy or speed racer would likely be my actual first anime I saw.

For me too, I guess many people watched it because it was shown on TV in a lot of countries.

Well, I watched DBZ since I was a kid, although Trigun/Cowboy Bebop airing on adult swim probably really got me into it.

I was going to say exact same thing! Those shows were great! Also watched Street Fighter II V around that time too on VHS! (Wow, just realised that was just about over 10 years ago!)
