Whenever anyone asks for criticism, they're never asking for the kind of "criticism" that's nothing but mean.

It seems you're missing the point of all this. It's not haters hating. It's regular-experienced translators (amongst other people) being annoyed by Goatmans' antics. Basically, Goatman is this guy amongst the Legion of.... Translators?....

Quoting this so it gets more vision, considering it's sound advice on how to improve the quality of the translations. I didn't embolden the second part, but that would be a good thing to keep in mind too

Grey just put up Desu's chapter 5 of Son Swapping, so you can compare your version to theirs. If your translations aren't accurate, or even if they are but just not as descriptive, that's something to work on. (this is to say you may capture what is being said, but not fully; example: page 2 of chapter 5 of Son Swapping - top right bubble -- a trip and sex is mentioned, but a full understanding is missing. If I saw that chat bubble and had to pick which to read, I'd go for desudesu's version)
I don't know if you have read Game of Thrones, but George R.R. Martin uses more words describing what's going on than he does dialogue between characters. I'm not saying to change anything that was originally said, but to be sure you're encapsulating everything. This isn't a novel but you want to ensure that if the RAW text sounds hot as fuck, you convey that in your English translation.

Language is tricky. I mean, I'm a native speaker, I have spent 7 years pre-University (Middle/High School) having English classes and 2 required semesters of English classes in University and my proficiency still isn't anything to flaunt. I only have Spanish as a second language, and I couldn't imagine trying to translate a doujin from English --> Spanish at a quality level, even after 4 years of Spanish classes. I don't feel a few lessons will completely solve the translational issues, and I also wouldn't know where to look to find lessons on the different problems. This is probably why being a native speaker of the language you're translating into is a huge advantage. As long as you have a good idea of what the context is and some of the key phrases, you can make it work. Your group could probably work on translating with an emphasis on making it work in English. It would be great if your translations are 100% accurate, but it's more important your sentences are worded in a way that we would naturally hear in English.

Regarding the smaller problems, which I had mentioned in a comment I'd left on your Son Swapping translation, anyone who has the balls to call themselves an editor should be catching those. Even if your editors are given translations that aren't 100% accurate, they should be able to create coherent sentences that follow syntax. Correcting an accidental word here and there should be a piece of cake, there's really no excuse for an 'editor' to miss a word that breaks a sentence entirely. I would suggest that your editors read through what they're given, and then read their corrections a few times after they make one - to be sure they agree with what they have changed. [EDIT: I may have misunderstood the purpose of an editor in the translation process. I assumed they would also be proofreading, as that's essentially what the title of 'editor' implies. If 'proofreading' and 'editing' are undertaken by two different people, then your issue is your proofreader with regards to what I said in this paragraph.]



Anyways, good luck to you guys! As I had also said in a comment on one of your submissions; I appreciate that you're trying to translate and add more content to the community. However, please understand that other Scanlation groups may feel less inclined to translate something that has already been 'translated'. So please make sure that if your translation is the only one we'll ever get, it is as good as the other groups. I don't believe I've said anything to be offensive, but please know I'm not trying to be rude.

I can't speak on behalf of the person that you are addressing your post toward, but I believe a number of people would be fine if they worked on improving their translations via those doujinshi. Aside from the C80 and COMIC1☆6 doujinshi, all of those have a good number of years since they were released - they've clearly been passed over by other translators. Those would be great places to work on improving the translation quality, while avoiding stepping on toes of other groups. I would still suggest Laruffii takes both pieces of advice from Grey Kitsune, by translating work they're interested in and then comparing it to another group that has released the same doujin. Just avoid posting said translation and rather use it as a means to compare and improve.
