Problems problems! I always find new Problems (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

New server new fun.
It always says Server does not support xterm terminal when I try to log in with Bitvise.

So i tried putty where it said something like cannot allocate putty. Google told me a way to pypass this with putty but now it says:
CODE
stdin: is not a tty

But it should be the same server, why does it act different this time?

What exactly did you do?

Also, from what I'm reading on the Bitvise site, they only support Windows servers.

Most of the time it's just a warning that can be ignored, but if you want to remove it, paste the output of this:

CODE
grep -E 'biff|mesg' ~/.bashrc ~/.profile

something is wrong there. The text is somewhere it should not be and it does not do anything.

I already tried to install an older ubuntu where I can log in normally but when I install the version we had before this happens (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Try pressing Ctrl-C and hitting Enter a few times and see if a prompt (the line with the dollar sign) shows up.
If you can't access via SSH there's not much you can do
What are you logging in as? root?

This is pure trolling. It is the same hardware and the same OS like we used last time (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Yep logged in as root and Ctrl-C did not work.

I will try to reinstall tomorrow and if that does not help I have to chose one of these:
CODE
CentOS 5
CentOS 5 - 2010-11-12

Debian 5
Debian 5 - 2010-11-12

Debian VarsBox
This is a customized version of Debian Linux. Out of the box, it is ready to run rtorrent + rutorrent. The first time you log in, VarsBox's home-brewed set up assistant will aid you in configuring your torrent client and creating a user account. Everything here is made to work out of the box, with no work or fumbling on your part.

Gentoo - Testing - 2011.08.11
Gentoo 2011.08.11 Image. Barebones, with only networking activated. Everything else will need to be manually configured. Make sure you read the Gentoo manuals.

If you only need to run a H@H client, they're not much different. I imagine you'll have to configure SELinux and iptables if you choose CentOS (unless they're using a modified flavor).

Alternatively, if you want to try and use your current machine, you can set up a SSH client under Cygwin and start issuing commands without actually logging in, which might solve the problem (I don't think the Putty program you're using can do that)

Wow! This is still ongoning. (just kidding, actually I did read the thread and know that you're trying again from the scratch just to get the hang of it). Sorry I have been absent recently...

Once again I will agree with Tiap. That "stdin: not a tty" will be most probably overcomed by sending one command at a time. i.e. setting up a Cygwin and then an SSH client.

But think with me for a moment here. You have two major objectives here, the 1st is to get used to Linux/Unix and the 2nd is to run H@H. Why don't you try installing a Linux (in dual boot with windows) on your machine? It will have a bunch of advantages connecting Linux to Linux:
* no need for putty, there will already be an SSH client present
* no need for Winscp/bitwise client, there's already scp by default
* if you install the same flavor on the server and on your machine you can test the command on your own machine first

And be sure that an Linux installed from a distribution comes waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the issues we have been facing here.

That's "life with Linux" for you (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Depeneding on who install/how it gets installed it can be very good ro a nightmare.

As Tiap said above
QUOTE
reinstall the OS

is normally the best choice. Only fully believe in a Linux you installed yourself.

Have fun with your Linux server

What was the error you had before?

Also after you've used Ubuntu for a while I would recommend installing SELinux & iptables and do not follow the Archlinux guide on installing H@H aka Advanced H@H Installation (at least with chroot and rc.d script, since it's easy to break free from it's environment and that rc script only works with Arch and BSD).

I just use CentOS and [www.howtoforge.com] this guide. If you google "perfect server centos X.X" you'll probably get exactly what you're looking for.

The problem you had in the first one was you didn't run

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

It's not in the first steps.

Also why use centOS?

Well I would assume it's because it's design is after stable and solid software than bleeding-edge.
Which is what CentOS is for.

It is probably not needed since my server rebooted once ever since i had but I ask anyways:
Is it possible by some Linux magic do make h@h autostart?
So every time the server reboots some program starts up and restarts h@h for me (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/duck.gif)

Yes

Also just remember if you're running any version of Linux and you reboot you have lost the game.

Nice (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

My new server will have 2 Hard Disk Drives and I want to do a little more then just running 1 h@h.
In the end I want to have 3 Clients running, the autostart script mentioned above and also teh monitoring software G just G is using in the other thread.

Sooo... I guess the procedure will be about the same in the beginning. Update Ubuntu (Ubuntu 12 64 bit) then install Java.
Then I need 3 instances of h@h. My guess it is the best to have 1 h@h at one hd and 2 in the second.
Then we want to install the monitoring software and the startup script to the first hd.

Problem is I have absolutely no clue how to create such a script and how to add it.
Same for the monitoring software! halp!
