Tenboro:

Since about a week ago, the forum has stopped sending me email notifications for tracked topics. I've tried standard things like clearing cache, deleting relevant cookies, and re-adding the subscriptions to see if it was a problem on my end. I have them set on immediate e-mail, but I don't get anything even though the threads have been posted in by others.

Please check it out when you have time.

Thanks

Sure it's working, it's just turned off. With a million users and a high degree of indiscretion about what kind of threads people track, the email load was in the 100k+/day range, which was causing issues.

I don't know how much flexibility you have in independently enabling/disabling subforums, but it would be nice to at least have tracking for news, releases, and WTS/WTB.

The way the code is structured, the email tracker doesn't know what forum the post is made in.

The core issue is that the forum can't be set to require email validation to send emails unless you also require it for the registration process itself, combined with the fact that it has no kind of throttling on frequency for sending the emails. Trying to shoehorn both into the current codebase would take more time and effort than I'm willing to spend, so it'll have to wait for whenever I can code some better forum software from scratch.

Invision doesn't have a monopoly, you can always shop around for other pre-made stuff. I hear good things about MyBB and Burning Board.

If the load is too high could this be a gold star perk or something?

does this also effect emails sent when you get a new PM?

Most pre-made forums simply aren't made to deal with very large communities. I've lost count of how many times I've had to make core changes to IPB simply to make it stop raping the server. Hell, unless I address it it'll fail hard if we ever hit 8 million members, as they figured a mediumint for user id ought to be enough for anyone.

Whenever we do switch, I want to have full control over the codebase and fully optimize it to be as speedy as possible.

You'll still get PM alerts.

How about removing all the ancient unused lurker accounts? (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well, for one, because removing inactive accounts doesn't reset the user id counter. There's no realistic way to use the "gaps".

It's not really a problem, I'd just have to go through the tables and change the mediumints to ints, but it's just an indication that they never planned for forums with a huge amount of registered accounts.

8 million members

Might need a few decades to hit that many users considering: Attached Image

Assuming our current growth rate of ~50k members per month...

Projected date for the given threshold to be reached: January of 2024

Well.

If the trend holds, the rate of signups doubles every other year. So it would, in fact, be less than a decade - or to be specific, six or seven years. Though you could say that it remains low priority for now.

It would be fair to assume that the amount of new users will keep on increasing with the site popularity.

In any case, it would be nice having some new forums, they do feel kinda like "welcome to the year 2000-isch" (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
