That's how my high school did it. I skipped college commencement, so I can't say what that's like.

We had a really terrible speaker (our state comptroller) who basically did a campaign speech. I booed and got looks from people next to me. The rest of it was waiting forever and trying to keep my handheld game hidden.

I hated the commencement speech for high school too, or rather the valedictorian's speech. Basically I didn't want to listen to some douche that did better than me rattle on about shit for a half hour, but they give you no choice.

Everyone at my high school went to graduation. I bet it would be weird/awkward if someone's name got called and they weren't there.

They call the name of everyone who graduates, yes. I don't recall anyone not being there for mine, though. I do recall one of the two co-valedictorian's giving a terrible and plagiarized speech, though.

Walk-up
Shake hands
Take fake diploma
Wait for the other people to get their's
After Ceremony
Go to the back-rooms to get your real diploma with everyone else

That sounds pretty much like how mine went, with the addition of also going through a loop of people being called up for various awards and the names of those who made the honour roll being read out.

Played on my new ipod until the row in front of us was called, put it away, got paper, went back to seat, started playing again.
