Hello, everyone. Since I see this sh*t is turning black, I decided to create this topic in order to talk about the new things that doujin-artists started to do recently: As you already know, Megaupload's closure has meant that many people (including Japanese artists) knows of the existence of this site. As a result, the attitude of certain artists on the distribution of his work has begun to change. Since the last edition of the COMIC1, some artists have begun to get a little more upset about how their jobs are distributed outside Japan and have started to wet his pants. As a result, many of them have started to put their legal warnings (the typical "Reproduction prohibited") in English as well as the respective Japanese message. I know all of that copyright thins regardind doujinshi and the fact that this is nothing new, but now with MegaUpload, all cyberlockers putting more restrictions and the authors showing a very different attitude about foreigners on the distribution of their works, I decided to put in consideration some questions that I want to discuss here with you, guys: 1. Does this attitude will affect in a short-term the process of scanlation in the future? 2. Have you had any experience of any doujin circle or artist who asked to not distribute their work, whatever it is (including translations)? 3. What do you think that now the authors are putting warnings in English? 4. Will we end up in a witch hunt, like most notorious case of Linda Project vs. All the foreigners? Discuss! P.D.: For purposes of researching, I put some examples of what I say: (Reitaisai 9) [Hellfragrance (Utsurogi Angu)] Hermit Pink (Touhou Project) https://e-hentai.org/s/6dafe21b91/497529-1(Reitaisai 9) [Nikutamasoba] Yosuzume Daisakusen (Touhou Project) https://e-hentai.org/s/38f7afb969/495242-33(COMIC1☆6) [Nanatsu no Kagiana (Nanakagi Satoshi)] Separation of Summer (Ano Natsu de Matteru) https://e-hentai.org/s/7d1a27ac3b/487216-26(C82) [GREAT Akuta (tokyo)] Yuka chan Youmono Porn Video ni Shutsuen su (Minami-ke) https://e-hentai.org/s/d3938b926f/525818-26This post has been edited by deadFreak: Sep 14 2012, 00:27

Doujin artists don't have enough money to burn e-hentai down to the ground. I would be worried about magazines and game publishers though.

Well, it's something implicit. The "danger" is here and the warning is here, no matter if the source is P2P or some people with good heart who scan their own doujinshi and puts on the Internet. The purpose of this thread is to discuss the effects of those "warnings in english" in the future, no matter if the doujinshi is scanned or translated (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Doujin artists have already been aware about scanning and scanslation for quite some time, before even the MU incident. Just take a look at bolze.'s doujins. He's been putting English warnings of prohibiting scanning, distribution, scanslation, and selling to under 18 of his works for about a year or so now.
To be honest, the doujin themselves are gray matter to begin with, since artists are using JAPANESE copyrighted material without permission to begin with. But this is generally overlooked because it has some benefits of bringing in new pool of artists and free advertising. Even so, artists really don't have much ability in terms of stopping this kind of scanning and distribution of their works - unless it's an original work, they really can't claim the content inside their works to be their own (since they're based off copyrighted works in the first place).
What any meager semblance of protection over their works in Japan they have, outside Japan they have no control because any form of copyrighted material are copyrighted in Japan - unless the copyright holder has also bought copyright protection in other countries such as United States.
Though I DO wonder about Touhou Project, which may be an interesting case. ZUN is the creator of it, so he should have the copyright/IP protection. I've also heard that he's pretty much against Touhou doujins. However given the proliferation of Touhou-themed doujins, it seems that he doesn't have much control over his property rights despite being the creator. Either that, or it's become so proflic that he can't afford to sue to enforce the control of his property.

He's not against Doujins, just touhou stuff on commercial sites (DLlist for one) as opposed to doujin sites
Many artists have warnings though the scanlation effort sometimes results in english speakers buying a doujin (and paying the import price) for new scans or to add to their collection. I know a few people with hard copy doujins even with this site's existence.
As far as Hermit Pink, it's more a of humorous thing I think as it's hard to take a curse seriously.
But as lightshader said, this is nothing new as I've seen other doujins with such warnings, though some variations go "without due credit" (i.e. not saying it was that artist that did it)
I certainly hope the doujin scene don't get as silly as the manga translation scene as they're easy to manipulate.
Step one: License series Step two: release it never or take a painfully long time Step three (optional): Cancel it if it doesn't sell alot.

Regarding bolze, he has an ambivalent stance regarding translations, although he forbids any form of reproduction in RAW form. As far as I know, there are some artists like bolze or Team Shuffle that has an stance against reproductions of their works on the Internet but has some kind of positive stance in favor of translations, although those artists will not endorse that kind of groups. Like everything in this life, there are people who permits (in certain form) the publications of translations, and others that strictly forbids (such as Linda Project and Tim Tim Machine), but that depends of the doujin artist. The thing MackDiesel puts is true. It's not like ZUN hates doujinshis, he is against the exploitation of their works in a commercial form (e.g. by some big companies and stuff). He has some copyright issues and states that only indie-work is allowed and commercial form is forbidden. It's a thing that depends of the artist or the company that has the IP.

What I am more curious is why are there no groups that encourage the distribution of their works and translation, and ask for donations instead?
For all its "5 years ahead of everyone else" mojo, Japan seems really behind the new Internet economy.

Yes, they're. Rebis, for example. Although he's totally against unauthorized reproductions, puts warnings in english [ web.archive.org] and said in his blog some years ago that people who does that is considered "criminals" by himself, he seems to be a good guy with foreigners as he responds questions in English (just as BehindMoon does), and he started to accept donations, as you can see on his website: [ www.dec.sakura.ne.jp] http://www.dec.sakura.ne.jp/~rebis/syamusy...ide_foreign.htmThis post has been edited by deadFreak: Jun 7 2012, 07:23

I think it would be beneficial to everyone. It would help if galleries had a separate feature for it, to avoid having to change all the links every time the artist changes donation link.

That would be nice. I know it isn't really the same, but I think vndb does something similar.

Don't most artists have their donate button on their homepages? It might be more useful to post the name they use on danbooru as it has links to the artist's homepages if they exist.

This kind of stuff really bother me as someone who scans things. I'm constantly worrying how badly I will damage the artist with my scans. It might not be much but I try to ease my guilt with those notices I put up in my galleries. QUOTE(MackDiesel @ Jun 14 2012, 05:39) Don't most artists have their donate button on their homepages? I doubt most japanese artists have donate buttons.

I think by scanning their works we boost their sales. Viral marketing, you know.
How many of those here who have paid for dojins did so because they first saw them (or that particular artist, or anime) online?
That said, I don't understand why some artists don't have donate links. Japan seems quite behind on some parts of Internet economy...

The alternative option can be putting the link in eh-wiki, and people put a link to that wiki page in the gallery description/comments. This way you don't need Tenb to re-write anything and achieve the same result (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
