Week 94

The Pink Panther 2
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_The_Pink_Panther_2.jpg)
Directed by: Harald Zwart
Distributed by: Columbia Pictures
The Category: Comedy
The Stars: Steve Martin, Emily Mortimer, Jean Reno, Alfred Molina, Andy Garcia, John Cleese, Aishwarya Rai, Yuki Matsuzaki
Price: $19.99
Running Time: 92 min.
Rated PG for some suggestive humor, brief mild language and action.

Witless Inspector Clouseau(Martin) is now a parking officer in France. But when a big-time thief known as the Tornado(Johnny Halladay) is responisble for stealing valuable artifacts, he is told by his boss, Chief Inspector Dreyfus(Cleese), that he will join a group of international detectives known as the Dream Team: Gendarme Gilbert Ponton(Reno), who's Clouseau's partner, Chief Inspector Randall Pepperidge(Molina) from Britain, Inspector Vicenzo Brancaleone(Garcia) from Spain, Kenji Mazuto(Matsuzaki) from Japan, and Sonia Solandres(Rai) from India. But while Clouseau is on the team, the Pink Panther diamond is once again stolen. Now Clouseau is going to have to retrieve the precious gem, while once again making a fool of himself. Yawn. Can anyone say repetition? That's basically The Pink Panther 2. Sure it has a grade-A cast, but that doesn't stop the fact it's just the same old thing. The characters are weak, and the laughs are even weaker. The first film was a lot better, and it wasn't too good itself. The DVD has a gag reel, 2 featurettes, and the first volume of the original cartoon. The cartoons are way better.

The Verdict: D
The Good: Has a great cast and it has episodes of the cartoon.
The Bad: Weakly done and quite the samw old stuff.

Confessions of a Shopaholic
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_Confessions_of_a_Shopaholic.jpg)
Directed by: P.J. Hogan
Distributed by: Touchstone Pictures
The Category: Comedy-Drama
The Stars: Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, Krysten Ritter, John Goodman, Joan Cusack
Price: $19.99-single disc, $21.99 for 2-Disc Edition
Running Time: 104 min.
Rated PG for some mild language and thematic elements.

Rebecca(Fisher) has a problem. She spends over $1000 in a month on just clothes. This bites her when when she realizes she's incredibly low on credit. At least she has a job in a New York magazine. One day she interviews Luke Brandon(Dancy) a successful magazine editor who had previously helped Rebecca buy a green scarf. Luke later hires her to work for his magazine, Successful Saving. Rebecca manages to start an article called The Girl With the Green Scarf and later she and Hugh fall in love. But she'll still need to fight those shopping urges. Another one for the girls, here. I'm surprised Jerry Bruckheimer, a guy who usually works for Michael Bay, did this. It's more of a romance than a comedy actually. The only real funny moments are when Rebecca goes on her crazed shopping sprees. It's plot is relativly simple, but is supported by a strong cast, including Krysten Ritter as Rebecca's best friend Suze, and Joan Cusack and John Goodman as Rebecca's parents. Guys, we won't find anything good about it. But women should generally enjoy it. The DVD is available in a 2-Disc Edition and has deleted scenes, bloopers, and a music video.

The Verdict: C- for guys, B for girls
The Good: Somewhat funny, has a good cast, and great for women and shopaholics.
The Bad: Sucks for guys.

Evilresident's Must Buy DVD is "Confessions of a Shopaholic" with a B/C-.

Week 95

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_Street_Fighter:_The_Legend_of_Chun-Li.jpg)
Directed by: Andrzej Bartkowiak
Distributed by: 20th Century Fox
The Category: Action
The Stars: Kristin Kruek, Neal McDonough, Chris Klein, Michael Clarke Duncan, Taboo, Moon Bloodgood, Robin Shou
Price:$19.99 for Unrated & Unleashed Edition
Running Time: 96 min.
Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and martial arts action and some sensuality.

Chun-Li(Kruek) is on a quest for justice. Years ago, her father was taken away by Bison(McDonough). Now she's aiming to take him and his cohorts, including Balrog(Duncan) and Vega(Black Eyed Peas' Taboo), down along with help from Charlie Nash(Klein) and Gen(Shou). That's the basic plot, I'm afraid. After mostly ruining Doom, Bartkowiak has now set his sights on Street Fighter. That old 1994 original with Jean-Claude Van Damme is actually quite an enjoyable film compared to this crap. It's got all your basic flaws: weak script, shitty acting, amateur directionm, lackluster effects, and extreme lack of faith to the game. The DVD is available Unrated & Unleashed and has commentary, deleted scenes, galleries, five featurettes, and a 75 minute animated film. I'd rather watch Uwe Boll shit than this, and that's saying something.

The Verdict: F
The Good: Yeah.....
The Bad: Everything involved.

12 Rounds
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_12_Rounds.jpg)
Directed by: Renny Harlin
Distributed by: 20th Century Fox
The Category: Action
The Stars: John Cena, Aidan Gillen, Ashley Scott, Steve Harris, Brian J. White, Taylor Cole
Price: $19.99 for Extreme Cut
Running Time: 108 min./109 min.
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action.

One year ago, Danny Fisher(Cena) was just and ordinary New Orleans cop. But by chance or fate, he accidentally ran into Miles Jackson(Gillen), international terrorist supreme. He caught Miles, but at the price of the death of his fiancee, Erica(Cole). Now Danny's a detective and is living with his girlfriend, Molly(Scott). Unfortunately he's about to get some bad new. Jackson has busted out of prison and kidnapped Molly in order for the revenge of the deat of Erica. In order to get her back alive, Danny's gonna have to play Miles' little game called 12 Rounds, a dozen insane challenges that can result in plenty of casualties. It's now a race against time for Danny if he ever wants Molly back. This is now WWE wrestler John Cena's second stab at being in a good action film. But this isn't exactly that film. It is, however, more entertaining than his first try, THe Marine, which was on my list of the Top 10 Worst Films of 2006. 12 Rounds is basically a mashup of Speed, Die Hard, and the TV series, 24. One of the most obvious ways is Miles making Danny do challenges, via cell phone, all while planning a robbery. Die Hard with a Vengeance anyone? And Danny's partner, played by Brian J. White, is almost exactly like Keanu Reeves' partner in the 1994 hit Speed. The acting is better than Marine, just barley hitting the acceptable mark, though Gillen is annyoing as a Hans Gruber-esque villain. The 12 rounds have on and off hits. One of my favorites is when Danny has to stop a speeding cable car. Overall, I think about half of the challenges are entertaining. and at least we don't have a car taking 300 bullets before it even catches one fire(another Marine problem). There are some unbelievable moments, but they have a gimme because the challenges in the film were meant to be incredibly tough and considered impossible. The DVD is avialble in an Extreme Cut and has an extended version of the film, commentary, 2 alternate endings, a gag reel, a featurette, and trailers. Cena's movin' on up in the film business, even if very slowly.

The Verdict: B-(cause I didn't fall asleep and it felt somewhat believable)
The Good: Some nice action as well as some of the challenges.
The Bad: It's too much like most action films.

Evilresident's Must Buy DVD of the Week is......"12 Rounds" with a B-.

Week 95

The Unborn
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_The_Unborn.jpg)
Directed by: David S. Goyer
Distributed by: Rogue Pictures
The Category: Horror
The Stars: Odette Yustman, Gary Oldman, Cam Gigandet, Ethan Cutkosky, Meagan Good, Jane Alexander, James Remar, Idris Elba
Price: $19.99 for Theatrical or Unrated cut
Running Time: 88 min./89 min.(Unrated)
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and terror, disturbing images, thematic material and language including some sexual references. Also Unrated.

Casey(Yustman) seems to have a problem. She keeps seeing visions of weird dogs and a creepy, blue-eyed boy named Barto(Cutkosky). One night after the boy she babysits attacks her, she has experiences Heterochromia, meaning she has different colored iris. After questioning her father, she finds out she had a twin brother that died in the womb. Casey thinks its a dybbuk, a possessing spirit, haunting her. With help from her boyfriend(Gigandet), best friend(Good) and Jewish Rabbi Sendak(Oldman), Casey is desperate to get Barto out of her mind, permanently. When I heard Goyer, the man behind the wonderful screenplay for the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight, was directing this, I was deeply interested. But after 88 minutes. I forgot anything he did that was even halfway decent. The horror is weak and the only scary parts were in the trailer. The performances are laughable terrible. The script? Forget about the gunk these knuckleheads spew out. At least its got Gary Oldman in it. He'the only good thing about this tastless frightfest. The DVD is available Unrated and has an 89 minute version of the film and deleted scenes. What a horrifying disaster.

The Verdict: D-
The Good: Gary Oldman.
The Bad: The movie chico, and everything in it.

Push
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_Push.jpg)
Directed by: Paul McGuigan
Distributed by: Summit Entertainment
The Category: Sci-fi
The Stars: Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, Camilla Belle, Djimon Hounsou, Ming-Na, Cliff Curtis
Price: $19.99
Running Time: 111 min.
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, brief strong language, smoking and a scene of teen drinking.

Nick Gant(Evans) is one of a group of psychics with special abilities. He is called a Mover, being able to use psychokinesis. In order to lay low, Nick is hiding in Hong Kong. After meeting with Cassie(Fanning), a Watcher, they race against time to find Kira(Belle), a Pusher who escaped the Division, a government agency who wants to enhance these psychics' powers to create super soldiers. And Agent Carver(Hounsou), the Division agent and Pusher who killed Nick's pop a long time ago, will stop at nothing to get Kira back. This reminds me of Jumper, though this is a little better. The acting is lame, but the effects and the action are pretty good. There is more to the plot, but it still has unfixed gaps. The script is a mess. The DVD has commentary, deleted scenes, and a featurette. It's just a rental for Saturday night.

The Verdict: C-
The Good: Some nice action and effects.
The Bad: Weak script, acting, and lack of plot.

Knowing
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_Knowing.jpg)
Directed by: Alex Proyas
Distributed by: Summit Entertainment
The Category: Sci-fi
The Stars: Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne, Chandler Canterbury, Lara Robinson, Ben Mendelsohn
Price: $19.99
Running Time: 121 min.
Rated PG-13 for disaster sequences, disturbing images and brief strong language.

Fifty years ago, the students of William Dawes Elementary School created a time capsule. Now the capsule is opened. Inside are pictures of what the kids the future would look like and all of the current students gets one. But one boy, Caleb Koestler(Canterbury) gets a paper that has nothing but numbers. It turns out back in '59, troubled girl Lucinda(Robinson, who plays a second role) wrote the numbers. Caleb's father, MIT professor John Koestler(Cage), after mere coincedince finds a small strand of numbers that reveal the date, longitude, and latitude of the disaster of 9/11. Soon after some analyzing, John finds out that the numbers are the dates of every disaster in the past 50 years. To prove his point, John is actually mere feet away from the next disaster, a plane crash that kills 81 people, just like the numbers said. He also gets with Diana Wayland(Byrne), Lucinda's daughter, to find out more on the numbers. But what will happen when the numbers run out? I was skeptical about this, thanks to Cage's recent list of disappointments. But it actually took off very well. The plot is laughable, but still I kept with it. Then the disasters. There are only two in the film, but they are fucking awesome! The best is the plane crash scene, where John runs through the debris, looking for survivors. In fact, the effects are really good. But here's the kicker: the last 20-30 minutes are so fucking off of the plot. I was like, what the fuck is this?!!!! I've heard of twists, but this is ridiculous. Cage is actually in better form than in most of his recent films. The DVD has commentary and 2 featurettes. If they would've scalped away that last half hour, this movie would've fully kicked ass and I would've given it an A-. At least it's way better than Bangkok Dangerous.

The Verdict: B
The Good: Excellent disaster scenes, and 2/3 of the film are fantastic.
The Bad: The last act ruins the rest of it.

Evilresident's Must Buy DVD of the Week is......"Knowing" with a B.

Week 96

The Haunting in Connecticut
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_The_Haunting_in_Connecticut.jpg)
Directed by: Peter Cornwell
Distributed by: Lionsgate Films
The Category: Horror
The Stars: Virginia Madsen, Kyle Gallner, Elias Koteas, Amanda Crew, Martin Donavan, Ty Wood, Erik J. Berg
Price: $19.99
Running Time: 92 min./102 min.
Rated PG-13 for some intense sequences of terror and disturbing images.

Based on true events, this story follows the Campbells as they rent a house known as the Aickman house. The main focus is on Matt(Gallner) a boy with cancer. His mother Sara(Madsen) thinks the house would be a good change for Matt. Well, she's about to be wrong. Matt and his younger brother Bobby(Wood) begins seeing visions of a badly burned boy who is later known as Jonah(Berg). It turns out this house used to be a mortuary, and the owner conducted nightly seances using Jonah. The horrors only get worse as the Campbells desperately try to fight off th spirits, who really want Matt. Like it says, this is based off the 1980s Southington, Connecticut case involving the Snedekers(go watch the Discovery Channel A Haunting episode of the same name). This is a halfway film, meaning it's not terrible, yet not great. I really liked the acting for this movie. The lead performances by Madsen and Gallner are excellent and they were perfectly cast. Elias Koteas is a also good as a minister dying of cancer who tries to help the family. The scares are pretty jolting., with a lot of pop-ups. But the movie really depends heavily on these "make you jump" scares. And there's always the cliches, like the infamous quote, "Get out of the house!!!!" Sad news for a film that could've been more entertaining. THe DVD is available in an extended cut and a has a 102 minute version, commentary, deleted scenes, a documentary, 3 featurettes, and the theatrical trailer. Maybe the sequel, involving a Georgia case, will be better.

The Verdict: C
The Good: Great scares and acting.
The Bad: Too cliched and reliable on pop-up scares.

Week 97

Coraline
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_Coraline.jpg)
Directed by: Henry Selick
Distributed by: Focus Features
The Category: Animated Adventure
The Stars: Voices of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Keith David, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr., Ian McShane
Price: $19.99-single disc, $21.99 for 2-Disc Collector's Edition
Running Time: 100 min.
Rated PG for thematic elements, scary images, some language and suggestive humor.

Based off of a children's book, Coraline Jones(Fanning) just recently moved into the Pink Palace apartments. Coraline feels neglected from her mom(Hatcher) and dad(Hodgman) and decides to explore her new home She meets some new neighbors like Wybie(Bailey Jr.) and Mr. Bobinsky(McShane). Then she finds a bricked up door that turns into a dark passage at night. This leads her to the Other World, an alternate reality. She has an Other mother and Other father, who are actually better than the real ones. Life is enjoyable for Coraline in the Other World until Wybie's cat(David) appears and warns her to get out. It turns out the Other World is not what it seems and unless Coraline wants buttons in place of her real eyes(this is the distinguishing factor between real and Other people), she'll have to find the way back to the real world. This felt like a mix of Alice in Wonderland and The Nightmare Before Christmas, only less gothic. The animation is great, using stop-motion techniques. The cast is pretty good, with talents like Dakota Fanning, Keith David, and Ian McShane. It's just the fact it feels like Selick's previous projects. The DVD is available in a 2-Disc Collector's Edition and has both the 2D and 3D versions of the film, commentary, deleted scenes, a making of and a featurette. It's great for goods, or at least a rental for adults.

The Verdict: B+
The Good: Well animated and casted.
The Bad: Fells like other familiar films.

Watchmen
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_Watchmen.jpg)
Directed by: Zack Snyder
Distributed by: Warner Brothers
The Category: Action
The Stars: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Caral Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson, Stephen McHattie, Matt Frewer
Price: $19.99-single disc, $22.99 for 2-Disc Director's Cut
Running Time: 162 min./186 min.(Director's Cut)
Rated R for strong graphic violence, sexuality, nudity and language.

In an alternate 1985, superheros, in particular a group known as the Watchmen, have been outlawed. One night, an ex-Watchmen known as the Comedian(Morgan) is attacked in his moult story apartment and thrown out the window to his death. Investigating the murder is Rorschach(Haley), an ink blot mask wearing Watchmen who is seriously disturbed. Rorschach gets the feeling that, "someone's picking off costumed heroes" and attempts to warn fellow heroes Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl II(Wilson), Laurie Juspeczyk/Silk Spectre II(Akerman), Adrain Veidt/Ozymandias(Goode), and nuclear powerhouse Dr. Jon Osterman/Dr. Manhattan(Crudup), but his attempts prove worthless. However, they begin to listen when Manhattan is accused of giving his old friends when he became the radioactive blueman. And things only get worse when Rorschach is framed for murder and Veidt is nearly assassinated. What follows is a search for who's causing this, all leading up to a shocking conclusion. In this world, the Watchmen watched over the cities, but who watches the Watchmen? The most celebrated graphic noevl of all time has now been created into a near perfect adaption. First, the acting. Everyone played their parts right, especially Jakie Earle Haley, who does a fantastic Rorschach(I now have high hopes for his role as Freddy Krueger in the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street reboot). Then there's the setting. The feel of a sick 1985 is made possible throught dark tones and set pieces. The music is a mash up of old 70s and 80s music, like Bob Dylan and Hendrix. On the negatives, Snyder completely fucked up the ending. If you read the book and then saw this you'd definitely know what I mean. But it's mostly faithful to the book. The DVD is available in a 2-Disc Director's Cut and has the 186 minute version, 2 featurettes, and a music video. ust rent it for now, cause in December there's gonna be a 5-Disc Ultimate Edition that has an even longer version of the film, somewhere arond 216 minutes.

The Verdict: A
The Good: A great cast, tone, and overall faithfulness to the original material make this one of the best superhero films ever made.
The Bad: A completely fucked up ending.

Evilresident's Must Buy DVD of the Week is......"Watchmen" with an A.

Week 98

ANNOUNCMENT: As of August 1, I will not be on the site for up to 6 weeks. But I'll be back!!!!! See more below the week's reviews.

Miss March
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_Miss_March.jpg)
Directed by: Trevor Moore and Zach Cregger
Distributed by: Fox Searchlight
The Category: Comedy
The Stars: Zach Cregger, Trevor Moore, Raquel Alessi, Craig Robinson, Hugh Hefner
Price: $19.99 for Theatrical/Unrated Fully Exposed Edition
Running Time: 89 min. Rated/ 90 min. Unrated
Rated R for strong crude and sexual content, nudity, pervasive language, and some drug use.

Four years ago, Eugene(Cregger) was going to get laid with his high school sweetheart, Cindi(Alessi) . But then he fell down the stairs and ended up in a coma. Now Eugene finally wakes up and his sleazy douchebag buddy Tucker(Moore) tells him that Cindi is now a Playboy Playmate. Now Eugene and Trevor are going to have to go on a road trip to get to the Playboy Mansion so Eugene can hopefully finish what he started. And along the way they end up getting help from big shot rapper Horsedick.MPEG(Robinson). But who knows what disasters await them, like psycho firemen. Yet again another sex comedy for the teens. But even they'll be highly disappointed. This is like a mediocre Sex Drive at the very best. The laughs are incredibly cheap. The characters are idiots. The lines are luaghable. At least Hugh Hefner appears. The DVD is available in an Unrated Fully Exposed Edition and has the 90 minute version and 4 featurettes. I laughed, but it wasn't for the jokes.

The Verdict: D-
The Good: It's got Hefner and is pretty short at least.
The Bad: The entire movie.

Dragonball Evolution
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_Dragonball_Evolution.jpg)
Directed by: James Wong
Distributed by: 20th Century Fox
The Category: Action
The Stars: Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-Fat, Emmy Rossum, James Marsters, Jamie Chung, Randall Duk Kim, Ernie Hudson
Price: $19.99
Running Time: 85 min.
Rated PG for intense sequences of action/violence and brief mild language.

Centuries ago, Lord Piccolo(Marsters) attempted to destroy Earth during a solar eclipse, but a group of monks stopped him by imprisoning hime with a technique called the Mafuba. In the present day, Goku(Chatwin) has just turned 18 and is given a 4-Star Dragonball by Grandpa Gohan(Kim). But one day he finds his home destoryed and Grandpa dying. It turns out Piccolo has escaped from his prison and is searching for the seven Dragonballs so he can destroy the earth, successfully this time. Goku's grandpa's last words are to find Master Roshi(Yun-Fat). After finding him, Goku is trained by Roshi so that hopefully Piccolo can be stopped. Now I've seen my fair share of shitty adaptions, but this definitely is in the Top 3. I knew this movie looked bad even before it came out. The acting is atrocious and laguhable, even though acting legend Chow Yun-Fat is present. The effects are equally terrible. That has to be the worst looking Piccolo in my short life. At least it tries to stay faithful through the familiar characters. But that's it. The DVD is available in a Z Edition and has deleted scenes, a featurette, a music video, and a gag reel. I even think the Blood: The Last Vampire adaption was better than this. And that was pretty damn bad itself.

The Verdict: D-
The Good: Familiar characters.
The Bad: Shitt adaption.

Fast & Furious
(IMG:[www.celebritywonder.com] http://www.celebritywonder.com/img/movieposter/tn/2009_Fast_and_Furious.jpg)
Directed by: Justin Lin
Distributed by: Universal Pictures
The Category: Action
The Stars: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, John Ortiz
Price: $19.99-single disc, $22.99 for 2-Disc Special Edition
Running Time: 107 min.
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some sexual content, language and drug references.

Dom Toretto(Diesel) is now making a living with Letty(Rodiriguez) stealing cars in the Dominican Republic, but Dom leaves Letty to find safer work in Panama City. Bad move on Dom's part, as Letty has now been murdered by a drug cartel. Now more furious than ever, Dom will have to team with his least favorite person: FBI Agent Brain O' Connor(Walker), who's also hot on the trail of the cartel. Oh yeah, and there's racing like always. This was a bit of a letdown. The racing and action great, but it's the best thing you're gonna get. The acting is so-so at best and you think they'd hire a better writer. And the plot's a bit rubbish too. The DVD is available in a 2-Disc Special Edition and has commentary, a gag reel, 8 featurettes, a short, a music video, and trailers. At least the DVD has a shitload of extras to compensate.

The Verdict: C+
The Good: Great action, racing, and tons of extras.
The Bad: Par acting and a weak story.

Evilresident's Must Buy DVD of the Week is......"Fast & Furious" with a C+.
