If you pray to God with enough faith, he will heal people such as terminally ill cancer patients. So why won't he heal the amputees? Does he discrimnate against certain groups of ailing people?

Well, just in case they're not: There is no evidence that anyone has ever been healed by prayer power. For that matter, there is no evidence that prayer ever accomplishes anything. Given how many people there are and how complex the universe is, the belief that God would listen to your own personal wishes as if he were your personal genie is so short-sighted and selfish that it disturbs me to witness such things. Pray for guidance. Pray for a sign that you're doing the right things in your life. Pray for closure or comfort. Don't pray for miracles to benefit your life; that's plain selfish. The effect of healing cancer with prayers has nothing to with god. People who have cancer and are surrounded by other people who pray for them are influenced by their actions and care for them. Their state of mind changes to a more optimistic one and this in turn changes their body chemistry which finally fights the cancer. Mind over body, placebo effect, call it what you want. Depression etc. can in turn lead to death and is then called nocebo effect. Leave this stupid man made joke called "god" out of it. Oh, and yes, changing the body chemistry is not able to grow new limbs, bummer.

Pain and Suffering is the longest running show in Heaven. Why would God cancel his stories?

*cue Setsuna* There is no god in this world. (I AM CONDOM)
OT: Wasn't it that amputees were amputated because [insert montheistic deity] willed it?

Science and medicine are the only things that have the POTENTIAL to grow new limbs.
Also, I hate when someone gives god credit for saving or helping them.
Edit: This reminds me of an episode of South Park when the kids ask if retarded people can go to heaven.

To some, good things happening are evidence of God's love, but bad things are not evidence against it. At least, that's how they interpret it.
It's called confirmation bias, and it's a critical flaw in a lot of arguments.

It's because science hasn't advanced fast enough, i.e. it's not that easy to verify that the "terminally ill cancer" patients are faking, and it's not that easy to fake limb regrowth (after all, the former needs a microscope, and the latter is glaringly obvious). Prayers will heal amputees soon after there's a reliable method to fake amputations/growth. This post has been edited by Softzephyr: Apr 4 2012, 11:33

This question, to me, seems more like a skeptical question to dispute belief in god rather than a genuine one. If it is... this is probably not the right place to ask it. This place is pretty much full of atheists, try some christian forum instead.

Healing amputees is too obvious. God wants us to think that "He works in mysterious ways". I think...

Putting myself into the shoes of a deist: If it went that far, god could also simply erase world hunger and secure world peace, have humanity birth-controlled and live in perfect harmony with nature, effectively rendering every last bit of personal freedom left in us impotent.
Restoring an amputee would be too big a task and too invasive, just as bringing back the dead. Cancer can be cured without the help of a miracle, so it's just a pebble toss, compared in effort.
It would be wiser to mentally heal the amputee: show him that life is still worth living and inspiring awe in others because the amputee learned to see its condition as nothing but a small nuisance to his alleged role in the world.

Oh, here I wish for once I could remember quotes more easily... Too bad OP probably won't be able to identify with this... This post has been edited by Benjiro: Apr 6 2012, 15:14

I message God every single day on Facebook that posters like you should drown in a vat of boiling oil. He still won't reply me. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Playing Devil's Advocate (ironic use of the phrase, too): It could be blamed on people like Adam and Eve, I guess. They had a choice between familiar paradise and the mysterious temptation. They chose temptation. Maybe that was the beginning of God giving up on us. So, you know, the world is going to shit because we made it that way, and God decided He's not going to get involved anymore because we never appreciated what He had to offer anyway.
Of course, that also presupposes that cancer patients never get miraculously healed.
Also, of course, this could all just be bullshit that we made up in an attempt to bring order and stability to the world while also reducing the fear of death. (Both of which backfired miserably)

This is a mere hypothesis based on belief - perhaps the OP's - and has yet to be proven.
Until it is proven, I am going to consider this to be a fallacy. Thus, amputees shall not be healed in such a way either, and this cannot be called discrimination.
