Nah, I am sure I only lost 1 stamina for failing a pony riddle after 0.6.6.
It's quite easy to miss that -1 stamina though, so I would say he might have missed that.

My guess will be "random damage to stamina x".
So far seen x=1, x=5, and if I'm remember it coorectly, x=10. Never thought it important.

Yesterday I failed the maze and lost 25 stamina.

Maybe some ponies are more susceptible when you fail to recognize them.

My experience to quickly recognize a pony is by its hair, tail and sometimes body (wings) and head (horn). Face and orientation don't matter.

Easiest: with a hat => Apple jack
Fluffy hair and tail => Pinkie pie
Pointy hair with wings => Flutter shy
Pointy, somehow curly hair with horn => Rarity
Striped, pointy hair and tail with wings => Rainbow dash
Striped but not that pointy hair with horn => Twilight sparkle
