When you get spirit shield, your damage taken will go WAY down. If you don't want to invest in plate/shield armor of protection/turtle I say plug at the lower difficulties until you get there.

Only when you're playing on higher difficulties. I rarely lose more than a point's worth of SP due to SS triggering since the damage is based on your max HP. That extra percent or two over 25% doesn't amount to much when you've just lost a quarter of your health in one shot.

I prefer not to spend too many points in HP Tank because Regen heals a fixed amount regardless of max HP, and having too much HP may ensure that Spirit Shield won't kick in enough to actually mitigate enough damage accounting for regeneration during unlucky hit streaks. YMMV, though.

If you want melee, go heavy. You can take hits better, you can do more damage, a bit of extra interference doesn't really matter that much since battlecaster isn't a practical playing style when you have no magic damage bonuses and supportive spells are cast infrequently or get set on IA, burden doesn't matter much because evade is unreliable and low, featherweight shard solves interference and burden anyways, and light armor isn't fast enough nor does it have enough evade to distinguish itself as a good melee style.

If you want mage, you of course go cloth. Casting offensive spells in light armor is just fail, your gonna use more mana and do much less damage.

I guess it all comes to light armor not having a role in this game anymore.

Believe it or not, light armor is more defensive than heavy armor as you don't take damage very often while power armor users enjoy amazing damage and crit bonuses for the complete loss of resist and evade. You're not at a level where this applies since spirit shield should have been placed at level 100 instead of 190, but you'll get there eventually.
