I have an arcanist set too. And a partial fleet/shadowdancer set. And guess what? The mitigation is BARELY better than my phase set which I put together with 60k credits while selecting peices based on EDB.

And you know what my phase set has? It lets me one shot rounds, has less interference and because I'm not using an ethereal weapon, it also gives me more evade.

Going by max values alone, a Shade set can give you more than twice the mitigation and around 30% more Evade than a Phase set (according to the wiki, anyway).

I don't think Shade has been nerfed here. Maybe Kevlar, but if your shade set was chosen to have high absorption (or even mitigation to a lesser extent) I believe you're doing it wrong.

You don't pick Shade to take a bunch of hits, you pick it to avoid them.

I didn't pick for absorption or mitigation. The values were merely decent. Also, diminishing returns means that you wouldn't get twice the mitigation with shade, or even kevlar. And even with my minimum burden exquisite mace, its evade is slightly lower than my phase set. It would be better if my mace was ethereal though (but I'm not really ready to dump everything on a good ethereal mace at my level), but only by about 15 percent.

The real point is that thanks to the removal of absorption and the introduction of featherweight shards, light armor loses the little "advantages" it had. Burden was already pitifully ineffective since it only reduced evade, which itself is rather unreliable and thanks to the pitifully low bases, you can't stack it enough to be a ninja (and now we have people getting NEGATIVE burden thanks to heavy armor proficiency and featherweights so they can get the same evade). The interference of all non-arcanist peices are still pretty high (heck its higher than kevlar), enough that it doesn't have a real advantage over heavy. Even arcanist peices still have enough interference that my arcanist set only offers 7 percent less mana cost than my kevlar set. Power armor does more damage than shade anyways, and a little bit more agility from shade doesn't make you fast enough to offset that (there's the shade "nerf").

Mages can't take hits anyways, so the removal of absorption just meant they could blast through rounds faster while light armor doesn't do as much damage as heavy, has to rely more on the unreliable evade (which isn't significantly better than phase evade or featherweight shards on heavy armor).

TLDR - I want ninja light armor! Buff evade, remove interference (at least from arcanist, lower for the rest). Calculate action speed differently so that light armor actually has a significant speed advantage. That'll be a start.

I wager that absorption was removed mostly because enemies level 100+ did hits of upwards of 2k+ and absorption was calculated *before* mitigation which made it far less important in comparison to mitigation. That, and Tenboro probably didn't want to actually take the time to scale it properly at high levels.

You can have ludicrously high resist % (upwards of 38% bonus) from arcanist gear, and the evade on shade by default is passable. It's meant to be a "not get hit entirely" armor as opposed to just straight up taking hits as heavy armor or the "burn everything before it causes serious damage" cloth armor.

However, damage avoidance kind of fails before you get spirit shield since there's no cap at how much damage you can take, so heavy armor is better for you in that regard.

Kevlar armor kind of blows at the moment. The physical damage (crush/slash/pierce) mitigations should be buffed to plate armor levels. As it stands, leather of protection is better due to having about the same protection on top of having a high resist value.

When you get spirit shield, your damage taken will go WAY down. If you don't want to invest in plate/shield armor of protection/turtle I say plug at the lower difficulties until you get there.
