on elemental skills: just max out the Area of Effect spells. I liked electric and fire the best but it doesn't matter much. Just be sure to cast them in the right order, that really helps.

Every single one? Even the first tier ones like Inferno? Or just second tier ones like Meteor?

only the higest tier you have access to. Although getting some cheaper spells might be useful for occasions where you don't need much damage and want to save mana. If that's worth the ability points you should decide yourself.
