The ponies in the original commercial look absolutely terrifying.

Fans of FiM tend to ignore the previous gens, or at least acknowledge that the 80's specials weren't that bad.

My sis has some of the older gen ponies i think... But the series was horrible, the 'characters' plain and the creators weren't culture savvy.
I'd have said now that you have to rather follow Lauren Faust's carreer.

Generally you already know enough of something, you just want to further expand on that knowledge, if anything just to reinforce what you already know... We're not like 12 dude, I'm sure most bronies know that this all originated from really horribly made pony toys.

Oh, OK, that's where the confusion about all of this comes from. I thought that if everyone had already known where it originated from then they wouldn't be into it because those toys were fucking hideous.
