Virtual memory is an abstraction that hides from the process the details of the exact memory locations the process is using, and presents to it a view of a contiguous address space. It's a useful tool, and it's not going anywhere. It might remind you of old systems where it was used, but thinking it'll go away just because it's been used for a long time only shows you don't understand the concept.

What next? Will we start teaching people about the advantages of navigating a system using basic DOS commands? Or how to launch programs on an Amiga OS?

Don't get mad cause I'm just teasin' ya. But there is no doubt that [hothardware.com] SSD will eventually eliminate VM as capacity sizes go up and costs come down.

First off, yes, DOS commands are important and necessary, same as BASH commands. I'd hate to see you script without proper understanding of it. They also happen to teach one better how the low level machinations of you computer works.

Secondly, Virtual Memory is quite needed right now. In fact, I've programed System on a Chip OSs that used Virtual Memory. Also, as Dlaglacz stated, it is an abstraction that uses the hard drive, be it solid state or not, to properly swap data so it may be moved to faster RAM when required. It is heavily used, as computers right now, which normally have 4-12 GBs of RAM, have programs that are wildly larger than that space (and sometimes people open more than one program at once, mind you - how many tabs have you got open in your browser, I wonder? You think all of those tabs, some of which might be playing HD youtube videos all fit in RAM?). Virtual memory also does many other things which are quite useful, and which I won't go into depth here, as they are also advanced, and quite difficult to explain in a few paragraphs in writing.

But yes, I'd recommend taking to heart what Diaglacz said, as I know what type of work he does, and I assure you, Virtual Memory is a paramount aspect of it. I may not agree with the guy in regards to politics and psychology, but one thing I know he's quite damn proficient in, is computers.
