In 1999 the complete remains of the first man to reach the top of Everest, George Mallory in 1924, were found on the mountain. Items were collected, his identity was confirmed and his body was analyzed to determine what had happened to him to lead to his death (a big fall on the descent that essentially snapped his leg in half, broke several of his ribs and one elbow quite badly with the cause being an impact that left a decent sized hole through his skull) and his body was given an on-site burial.
In 2024 the foot of his climbing partner Andrew Irvine was found some ways below the previous site, having been churned out by a glacier (still in its boot) and raising doubts that the rest of him will be able to be recognized let alone intact...but still giving a better estimate of its possible location than before. A much earlier report by a Chinese climber suggests it was originally in a cave above where Mallory was later found.
In the time since 1999 Mallory's body has gone missing despite its location being defined, down to having a gps marker placed right on top of the grave.
The Chinese mountain authority are suspected of purposely displacing the remains of both climbers to enforce their propaganda that the Chinese were the first to reach the peak from the north face in the 1960s, with one saying around the time of the 2008 Olympics that saw Everest partially involved that Irvine was indeed found but "thrown off the mountain well before (the 2008 Beijing Olympics)"
