One day i'll have to look in to Equestrian physics. Apparently, clouds can not only support pegasi, but also muffins. I love it.
That's because after being in the possession of Derpy, even for a few moments, muffins have the density of nothing, which gives them a weight of nothing. And since nothing is lighter than the surface tension of clouds, the derpy-touched muffins are supported by clouds.
Also, Derpy is Derpy, so we could also explain it that way.

My theory is that clouds contain a magical element that i'll call nubium. When it reaches a certain density, it becomes immovable. Pegasi would then be part cloud, i.e. they have a certain amount of nubium in their tissue, but not in a density high enough to make them immovable. But when they touch a cloud, the density exceeds the magic limit and that part of the body gains support. Also Derpy mixes clouds into the muffin batter.
Yes my theory is flawed but i like the idea that pegasi are part cloud. Also cloud muffins. Because clouds are an essential nutrient for pegasi.

I prefer the simple theory of magic, as explained in the show. All the ponies contain magic, earth ponies of the earth, pegasi of the clouds, and unicorns of whatever their talent is. So pegasi can sit on clouds and move them because they have dense amounts of sky/weather magic in them. It's also why AJ and Big Mac have to harvest apples every other damn day, their magic makes them grow crazy fast.
