That's exactly what I'm saying about NGE. And the masses will usually clamor over it. I enjoyed NGE but I didn't find anything special to obsess over. Probably cus of the overtly religious and pseudo-psychological stories that I found entertaining as a distraction but I didn't try to dig some deep meaning out of it all. I am annoyed when such blatant religious/ideological symbolism is just splattered to give people an impression that there is a deeper meaning when really it's just meant to be a good story and nothing else. Thus, why I was slightly curious about why the producers of Brain Powerd dropped a few crosses here and there, specially the huge cross on Orphan leading up to the central core. The story had nothing to do with religion and I found it distracting. This post has been edited by Pseudoshy: Jan 28 2012, 05:27

As I got older, I decided that all the overt symbolism just convoluted the plot.

Agree 100%. Regardless, I am still looking forward to the Rebuild stuff. I have 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone and 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance on bluray (actually, if I remember correctly, above 1.0 and 2.0 they ONLY release on bluray). I haven't even seen them, I just own them. I'm afraid I'll be too impatient during the making of the third and fourth movies. I've learned from Gundam Unicorn that with such a long time between releases it may be better to just wait to watch it until it's all out and done.

In Rebuild, they're supposed to have take some of the clusterfuck out and made it more coherent so that a sane person can watch it and go "Oh, okay".

Well, that's good to hear because I want to make my roommates watch it. Hmm... I'm even more curious about it now. Maybe I should watch the movies I do have. I can always rewatch them once the final movie comes out anyways. That's also what I plan to do on the days following up on the release of episode 6 of Unicorn. 'Sides, I've rewatched plenty of shows, so its not like I consider it a waste of time...

QUOTE(Pseudoshy @ Jan 27 2012, 21:16) It replays the book of Revelation, how could it NOT have possibly been meant to be Christian? Or did the producers just somehow come up with the same thing the bible said without any pre-existing knowledge of it?
Somewhere I read a quote of one of the producers saying something to the effect of: "Everyone was going totally fucking psycho, so we decided to show that in the animation." Also, they chose Christian symbolism because it "looked cool" and "was exotic to the Japanese." I think I read somewhere that Anno's dad was a Christian something-or-other and most of the script was a meshing of the teachings of Evangelical Christianity, hence the name, and the bullcrap Anno's psychologist was telling him at the time. So, really, it's all coincidental. This post has been edited by radixius: Jan 28 2012, 06:28

Well, either way I decided (like mal) that the overt symbolism was a bit much for the story. I still really liked the anime as it got all metaphysical and shiz toward the end, like Gundam 00, but Gundam 00 simply said 'there is no god' and went the path of (pseudo)science instead of the strange mix of eastern ideologies and western religions. I liked Evangelion because it tried something different. Anno may be a hack, either literally or jocularly, but he did something amazing that a lot of people have tried to touch on, but haven't really been able to duplicate.
And I can respect that. But I'm kind of an art fag.

You may like the rebuild of the series then. It is four full length movies on a new script that depicts new events and even a few new characters. Unfortunately it is going painfully slow. I've seen a few bits and pieces of the first movie just to check out the quality and it is zOMG!11!! animation. Pretty new and very nice looking special effects. The first two movies are out, the third one will be released later this year, and the final movie is supposed to be out next year.

I couldn't find any English subs for Great Mazinger, then after some snooping around I learned that it has never been translated into English. It has, however, been subbed into Spanish because Great Mazinger enjoyed pretty good fame in the Latin American countries. I guess I will have to watch it in Spanish, which isn't a big deal, but I would much rather see English subs. Maybe I should join a translating team and help them by translating a script from the Spanish subs to English? I wouldn't mind spending some time on a project like that and actually being able to bring a classic over to the English speaking community. Its only 56 episodes and if it's anything like Mazinger Z, the story isn't all that intricate and its relatively easy to follow. I'll have to start looking around to see if any subbing group is already working on it.
After scouring some more, I have found one lone group who tried translating the anime and they made it up to episode 21, but their last update on it was April 8 2010 and no word on Mazinger since. They don't even have seeds up for their prior releases since their links are old now and their megaupload ones are of course down now... Guess no one really wants to take the time to code the subs and whatnot. I would totally translate a script for free if a group was willing to put out a release of the show.

I wonder why so many animations are done in Korea. Is it really that much cheaper? What the hell are producers going to do if war breaks out there again?

Yes, it is. And they'll just to some other country in the area. The Philippines do a lot of animation work.

Oh, really? Know any animations done there? I'd like to compare the quality.

Not off the top of my head. I think most of the stuff that gets shipped there is from the US since Japan almost exclusively uses Korea save for a few odds and ends here and there.

After some searching, it seems the Philippines have a damn good reputation and standing in animation.
It's fun to learn.
