I thought the manga and novel industry was taking a turn for the worse when they couldn't help but publish endlessly generic isekai. "Step 1: descibe gimmick, step 2: achieve power fantasy and/or harem, step 3: publish". But this new trend of "kicked out of the hero's party because I'm weak but then it turns out I'm not" is even worse. Like it removed any semblance of decent writing just to make the story as easy to consume as possible. Characters exist to either 1) jerk the protagonist off while they act depressed or 2) pretend like they aren't jerking the protagonist off

And that's why I'm stuck in the past.
Progress is overrated. I want stuff with emotional impact and/or thoughtful storytelling, and I am not finding it.

Recently, I read some Japanese novels. Roughly speaking, I died of exhaustion and went to another world to live the life of a saint in a village or forest instead of going on big adventures

Synopsis of "Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway":

Office worker Yoshida has been crushing on his coworker, Airi Gotou, for five years. Despite finally scoring a date with her, his confession is promptly rejected. Drunk and disappointed, he stumbles home, only to find a high school girl sitting on the side of the road. The girl, needing a place to stay the night, attempts to seduce Yoshida. Despite rejecting her advances, he nevertheless invites her into his apartment.

The next morning, the girl, introducing herself as Sayu Ogiwara, reveals that she has run away from Hokkaido all the way to Tokyo. During her six-month spree, she continually traded sexual favors for a roof over her head. Yoshida, however, remains unswayed by her seduction. Instead, he has her do a different kind of work—one that entails washing dishes and doing laundry. And so, a touching relationship between a heartbroken adult and a runaway high school girl begins.
