Yeah depends on the environment and culture/climate. If people are happy working hard and motivated that motivates others. The more people that get used to slacking the more it spreads.

I know Wikipedia isn't 100% reliable, but I think it'd be mentioned in that Eclipse's article if that were the case, since it's not a polarizing politically charged topic or neglected article.

It's not mentioned, so it seems that's not the case. I'm no astronomy aficionado though.
