The liner in ALL aluminum cans is not plastic, it’s a food grade lacquer that is sprayed into the can and then baked on during the forming process.
The reason for the liner is to protect the aluminum from the corrosive effects of carbonated drinks. Cans with bad liners (missing spots, thin sprays) can begin to leak within hours of being filled, depending on where the thin spot occurs. Part of this is because of the drinks, but part is also because of the thinness of the can sidewall. Cans are punched and pressed to such a thin degree that any microscopic defects can render the can body practically leaking from the moment of filling and capping, hence the liner also protects against this possible failure.
Consider that when you’re guzzling your Coca-Cola… if that drink can do that to aluminum, what can it do to your body?
Besides soft drinks, tomato products for one are quite acidic.
