Did you know that a third core alien technology is invisibility? They show up on thermographic, but not in visible light. People often ask, if everyone has a camera these days, and surveillance cameras are everywhere, why aren't there more pictures of aliens? This is one reason why. You need to set up thermal & visible-light cameras viewing the same scene, and have machine vision watch for things that only show up on thermal. This is just becoming cost-possible.
Thermal radiation is due to the inevitable oscillation of charges within anything not at absolute zero. It is physically distinct from the absorption & re-emission of light due to electrons being transiently excited to a higher energy level. Human science conceives of the absorption of light as probabilistic. There is a way to bias matter so that the absorption of light is much less probable, resulting in the object becoming highly translucent.
This is the actual functional reason why humanoid "aliens" (again, actually genetically modified humans) have the characteristic large black eyes. They are specifically modified for stealth. If you became completely invisible, you would be blind, because your retina would be transparent. But human vision already operates over several orders of magnitude of brightness, from day to night. The enlarged eyes are not only for enhanced night vision. They also allow them to navigate in bright daylight, with the lens & retina of the eye rendered highly translucent.
There could be an "alien" in the room with you right now. Without a thermal imager, you couldn't see it.
They are not harmless or benevolent. They have an economy of force doctrine, because dead & injured humans attract unwanted attention, but if they feel threatened, they shoot people with a literal ray gun. A beam of actinic radiation, which causes internal radiation burns to the brain, or other tissue it hits. Specifically designed to incapacitate or kill while leaving minimal forensic evidence.
Inspired by this, humanity has already developed a similar weapon using focused microwaves, which is why Havana syndrome is similar.
