I confronted him about it, then he brought up the fact that I buy DLC for video games. Not the same thing, in my opinion. Your thoughts?

It's the same thing. You're buying extra content for a game you're playing by purchasing DLC. He's buying extra content for a game he's playing by purchasing a general, which needs to be downloaded and is then considered content, thus, the content is downloadable.

To me its similar, but not the same. The DLCs are entire modules that add chapters and more to explore of the game (well, the DLCs I buy, I realize there are some weapons and armor packs for certain games but I stay away from those). He pays for having an advantage in the video game over other players. Spending real moneyz on an online competitive game is not the same thing as, say, downloading an expansion for Fallout.

It's like buying gold on WoW.

That's fair. I wasn't aware the extra characters in DW:Gundam added a whole bunch of content besides just the character. But at least it wasn't a skin he bought. Be thankful for that at least.

ADDENDUM: Granted, I know jack shit about League of Legends, but from what I've gathered from casual glances is that each general or character plays different in some way. Not that I'm defending buying DLC, although I've purchased some myself I came to realize that it's pretty much a foolish thing to do regardless of situation since the stuff you're buying should have been in the game in the first place and purchasing it is pretty much a waste of money and shows just how intelligent and monetarily savvy most gamers are these days. No one gives a shit, anymore, about quality or the experience of gaming as it was, and I'm not going to be a fucking cocksucker and assume that games were better "way back when" because, let's face it, Atari, Colecovision and NES games are by and large fucking horrible shit barring few exceptions if looking at it by percentage, but game developers don't seem to respect the intelligence of the people they are selling their products to. About the only thing I do with my money game-wise, anymore, is a monthly subscription to World of Warcraft due to nothing else out there for fifteen dollars a month that interests me and a monthly donation to Kingdom of Loathing because I enjoy their free game and respect the work that they put into it. And even that is too much.

But what can we do as consumers? I've seen so many instances of people bitching about the industry and nothing being done about it. I almost wavered in my Capcom boycott as I nearly got the Virtual Console version of Mega Man X on the Wii, but then I remembered why I was boycotting the company, and promptly stopped. My thoughts on this whole thing was summed up [www.escapistmagazine.com] pretty nicely in this video.

Most DLC nowadays is already on the disc at the time of release and you basically are just buying a way to unlock something you already paid for, at least your friend seems to be buying original content.

No quoting, cus im on my phone but:

Rad: Yeah, I agree in general DLC is asinine. I've ranted about it somewhere around here before. As for the characters and mobile suits they come with a story mission set. Doesn't really add much depth though since by the time the DLCs were released I had all skills, tons of money, and all pilot licenses so it really only added a few hours of extra playtime. As for my friend, im going to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't spend too much money on the game. He started to play it because its free but I've also heard that you just spend a dollar here, maybe a dollar there, and next thing you know you spent 100 dollars on stuff and half of it wqs cosmetic.

Iliketopost: i've heard about that, though im sure the few DLCs i've download aren't on the disc. Thats why i didnt download all the extra stuff for Dragon Age 2 that was available on release. I found it cheap and uncalled for. So in general yeah I don't like the way DLC is handled, but my point of this discussion was about my friend's purchased characters and DLC for my games.

I've only downloaded all expansions for fallout NV and all pilots and missions for DWG 3. I thought about getting stuff for the assassins creed videogames, dragon age 1 and 2, and dead space, but I thought about those and decided that the content wasn't really worth it.

My teacher told me about this MMO that lets you order pizza inside the game. Like, your playing the game, bring up a menu to order pizza and it is delivered to your house. In theory, you never have to stop playing.

I think that's a bit extreme...

I've also heard that it's fucking 'tarded in that regard. Which is why I've avoided it.

The whole sequence twelve and thirteen debacle from Assassin's Creed 2 is where I started to draw the line.

Same. And just a little bit after when DA2 came out and it had the extra chapter up for download BEFORE THE GAME LAUNCH was when I just said fuck the DLC industry. Still, I had to get the fallout expansions, those are pretty legit.

How do you figure? It's an online game; there's no disc in the first place. Any data stored on your machine is just cached versions of stuff on the servers (with maybe some exceptions). They're just paying to unlock stuff that's already been added to the game.

Anyway, I'm not outright against free games with pay items, but the people buying the things should be doing so because they love the game and want to support the developers, not because it'll confer them some special ability or unfair PvP advantage. At the same time, though, I don't like companies making people pay for simple stuff like different costumes. It costs them nothing to load a different geometry on the player's character, and given how many online games offer a lot of customization from the start, it's hard to justify making people pay for costume changes.

Also, I hate online games with totally generic stories and unoriginal gameplay that suck in players just by having anime-style graphics and scantily-clad female characters with huge racks. If you want to take advantage of hormone-fueled teenagers, fine, but at least sell them a decent product, not another stupid copycat.

I hate online games in general. People are fucktards and I don't want to play with them, they'll just ruin what little enjoyment I derive from it.

I generally hold the same sentiment, but I'm gonna play Diablo 3 when it comes out with my roommate. Besides, D3 only allows for four players in each game, so I don't really have to deal with random fucktards, just friends popping in and out.

Female Wizard here. Roommate is gonna be a male Barbarian. When me and him used to run around in WoW I was a gnome mage and he was a draenei pally, so this is kinda equivalent in classes. I didn't stick to wow for long though, dropped it in less than a year.

Damn, you're an old school WoWer then. I only joined when the Burning Crusade had already been out for a while, then not long after (I had just gotten to the good raids) the frozen north or whatever that was called came out. I quit like three months after the release of Ulduar. I quit mainly because I raided my brains out and I was tired of the grind. So I was probably playing for about 6 to 8 months.

D3 will be awesome though. Depending on its timing I may be able to play it religiously, at least for a while. If it gets released AFTER I get to SDSU then I probably wont have too much time, just weekends, since I'll be taking a minimum of 18 units per semester.

The ideal online game is probably one with a simple, limited rule-set that makes strategic victory more rewarding than griefing or drama. Also, an interface that doesn't allow the other person to talk to you at all.

Pretty much. I've only ever seen online Scrabble that had text chat. I guess that's fine when you're just playing on Facebook with people you know from Real Life, but otherwise... I foresee problems. Like arguing spelling and grammar with some 12 year old in the Philippines.

Why do I always think there's another L in Philippines?
