Because it's a lose-lose situation for them, I don't know why people ever expected a remake to begin with.
Making a game of the same length and breadth as Final Fantasy VII but with modern graphics (think Final Fantasy XII and later) is nothing but an insane task that would take years upon years to complete, with no real guarantee of payoff. So, you have to compromise:
- Should they do a remake without state-of-the-art graphics, something along the lines of Ni no Kuni? Nope, people are gonna bitch to no end about it, and "Final Fantasy" has become a synonym for "muh pretty graphics" lately, so nope again.
- Should they cut stuff and make the game shorter? Good luck with the ensuing shitstorm.
Either way, they lose.
And let's be honest for a moment, do you
really want Square Enix to make a remake? They're the same shitty company that produced Final Fantasy 12, 13, 13-2 and Lightning Returns.
